I have a suggestion or two for you, as I think this is a project well worth continuing on:

1. make the world a very, very big sphere.
   2.Make the atmosphere slowly fade away as you get closer and closer to, say, hmmmm... 50km? If you were to make the sphere half the size of the earth or smaller (1/4 smallest), 50km would be a good atmosphere edge (maybe 25km if it's going to be 1/4, which I actually think might be best). Over 50/25km, the atmosphere would be no more than a blue halo around the planet. The skybox should extend out about 200km.

2. how about 3-6 seconds of flames on re-entry just for good measure? ;)
   So, what do you think of my idea? I'm looking forward to hearing your thoughts.
