What is The Forgotten Cartridge?
The Forgotten Cartridge is a Creepypasta about a forgotten Mario game.
Story
Last summer, I found an old game cartridge in my attic while cleaning boxes. It looked like it belonged to an old console. The strange part was that it had a faded sticker with one name written on it in red marker:
“MARIO?”
The question mark looked scratched into the plastic.
I thought it was probably some weird fan game or bootleg, so I decided to try it.
When I started the game, the title screen appeared:
SUPER MARIO
But the logo was broken. Some letters were missing, and the music sounded slow and distorted.
There was only one option:
START
The first level loaded. It looked like a normal Mario level, but something felt wrong. The sky was gray instead of blue, and there were no enemies or coins.
Mario appeared.
I pressed the arrow key and walked to the right.
After a while, the screen faded to black, a message appeared:
“WHERE IS EVERYONE?”
The level restarted by itself.
Luigi was in there. He started walking to the right. Suddenly, the screen faded to black again. Messages appeared:
“YOU MADE A MISTAKE.”
"A BIG MISTAKE."
The game loaded a new level automatically.
This time the background was completely black.
Mario started walking.
After a few seconds, another character appeared behind him.
It looked like Mario… but wrong.
The colors were darker, and its eyes were completely black.
He turned around, and killed Mario.
It slowly walked toward Mario while the music played backwards.
Then the screen turned red.
The final messages appeared:
“THIS CARTRIDGE WAS FORGOTTEN.”
“YOU SHOULD HAVE LEFT IT THAT WAY.”
