this is amazing!!! the graphics are really consistent with their retro style and the game looks and plays just like the real one! and the file size is so small, amazing job!!

Current State

Levels 1 and 2 and bosses 1 and 2 are playable and killable respectively ! Most core mechanics are implemented, if not all, and what's left to do is pretty much only game and sound design, and art.

Controls

  • Move : WASD (automatically mapped to ZQSD on French keyboards) or arrow keys (choose in the main menu)

  • Quit : escape (at any time)

  • Fire : I

  • Switch ship polarity : O

  • Shoot homing missiles : P

  • Pause the game : M, , (comma) on French keyboards

The last four keys are customizable using the Configure controls option in the main menu.

nKaruga is being coded in C++ by matrefeytontias, using SDL 2. The game uses the n2DLib graphics engine I (matrefeytontias) wrote for the occasion.
Sprites by Metaru, Ibarakuro, Hayleia, Arthigo, aeTIos, pierrotdu18, Cpt Naughty and matrefeytontias, in descending order of contribution.
Music and SFX by Blvtch aka RGB Music.

Actual description

Defeat dozens of enemies and avoid and/or absorb thousands of bullets in this 2D demake of the legendary shoot-them-up by Treasure, Ikaruga !

In this action-packed SHMUP, all you have to do is reach the end of every level by blasting your way through waves of villains, and defeating the boss that awaits you at the end.
But there is a twist : your ship has two polarities, light and shadow, and so do your enemies. You can absorb bullets of your polarity to increase your power level, but bullets of the opposite polarity instantly and ruthlessly destroy you ! Don't worry, enemies don't absorb bullets of their polarity - but bullets of the opposite polarity do double damage on them !
Actually, there is another twist. This game is a scoring game : kill enemies by groups of 3 of the same colour to increase your chain bonus to a maximum of 25600 points (and obviously score all of dem points), but beware not to break that chain, because then said bonus goes back to 0.
The game features 3 difficulties. At first glance, the game is actually the same on every difficulty setting. The thing is that playing in Normal makes enemies fire suicide bullets of their polarity at you when you kill them with bullets of their polarity. Not hard enough ? Try playing in Hard, where enemies always fire suicide bullets back when dying. Not so tough now heh ?

Did I mention the game was super hard ? As hard as the original in fact ? Pretty sure I did.
