My main goal when I started working on this project was to create a very simplistic tower defense. As a big fan of the genre, I've always felt that most of the TD games tend to be too complicated or diverted from their initial goal : build towers and fight waves of ennemies.
Now, don't get me wrong. Even if the main objective of the game is simplistic, it doesn't mean there's no skill involved or no diversity.
I do want the game to be hard even if i'll add several difficulties later on. Concerning the diversity, it will come at different levels :
The mission objectives will be different from one level to another : from cleaning ennemies waves to killing boss or taking objectives down.
There will be a good and balance choice of different towers and upgrades : i'm not sure how much towers i'm aiming for in total but this is key to me.
There will be a bunch of different ennemies, not some basic skin repeated over and over.
Some enemies will have powers, such as regen aura, speed boost etc.
Also, the environnement will change every few levels.
Last but not least, i'm aiming at 2 game modes : a campaign and a challenge mode. In the campaign mode, you'll have cinematics, story & level to clean. I'm aiming for 30 levels and about 6-7 hours of gameplay.
The challenge mode will include up to 10 different levels with specific objectives and environnements. There will be a highscore for each challenge level. I'll talk more about this challenge mode later on.
As for the game design, I have to say i'm not a big mobile game fan and I do regret that the TD genre boomed on mobile and deserted PC/Mac supports.
So this was very important for me to have a very visual and smooth game. I naturally chose to do a 3D game.
Now, i'm not a game designer and i'm even pretty bad at design. I try to keep things simple. This is not always easy as i'm working alone on this project and I do not have a lot of money to invest in it currently. So I use mostly free assets. In the future, the design of the game is definitely something I want to improve.
