After many, many timelines (and after the past timeline with all the events like eager to hug, red aspergerania, necroptosis, etc.) sans suddenly remembers his core motivations he had by killing everyone: He wanted to stop the human, and end the endless cycle of death. But all the killing has manipulated and twisted his view on everything, which made him go crazy. Sans has a emotional breakdown, but stands up for himself after some time, deciding to give his all in one timeline, while growing more and more depressed, the more it keeps going on.
