This game is a clone of Super Crate Box created by Vlambeer.

BACKGROUND
I created a clone of Super Crate Box a few months ago. The gameplay remains nearly the same except I have made two major changes; the level layout will change while playing and a combo system has been added.
Originally I started work on this as an university assessment where I needed to create a component for a game and test that component. I chose to design a level for Super Crate Box that would change aspects of itself as the game was played. For testing I made a basic prototype that I added to over time that resulted in what I have now.
For the changing platforms I looked at the design of the existing levels, what made them difficult and the effects changing different parts of the level would have on the game. Collecting a crate will cause platforms in the level for turn on or off. This replaces the weapon switching mechanic in the original game.
The combo system works by having each crate collected add to a timer. If the player collects a crate without the timer running out they are given points equal to the number of crates that they have collected since the timer started. The combo system adds tension by encouraging the player to act more quickly for more points.
I made the background music of the game during an audio class for an assessment. Both this and the audio assessment were given at about the same time, so I felt it was a good idea to combined them in some way.
Overall this game is one of my favourite things that I have created in the last year and an assessment piece that I enjoyed making.
