Hello everyone! It's been a whole year since the release of A Bite at Freddy's.
It all started a few years ago with some sketches of the Fazbear crew in a talkshow setting. It wasn't even intended for a game. At some point I was looking through some unused game ideas I had, one being for a FNaF game jam from around 2018. I thought the talkshow characters would fit right in with the concept. The concept is now pretty far removed from what the game turned out to be, but it set off the initial idea.
After a year, around mid-2022, I started to properly plan out and develop the game. It took a while longer than my other fangames because of a mix of other responsibilities and a push for some quality standards. The point was to have a solid entry in the lineup of my games.
There was a lot to learn when making this game. The biggest was programming in a new engine, in this case being Godot. I'd never released a game using a proper text-based engine before, so a lot of development time was taken up by just figuring out how the engine worked. I also did a lot of experimenting with Blender to make the models. When making Threadbear I manually drew in all of the cloth damage by mouse (no special brushes)—which I think turned out well, but also caused some crazy hand-aches. It probably wasn't the best approach to texturing him.
Out of all my fangames, this is by far the best received. A major goal was to have a smooth release, which I felt it was successful at. Of course no game release is perfect, but at least it wasn't immediately falling apart this time. I've also seen the complaint that this game isn't very scary, which is true, but it wasn't a major goal for the game. I see the game as a sort of spinoff within what I'd call the "Fredbear and Friends" universe. So this particular game has its own themes and generally lighter tone, while the "main" games are supposed to be darker/serious (whether or not they come off that way).
As of now I don't have plans to make another fangame. I have plenty of ideas for them, but it doesn't make a lot of sense in the lineup of other game ideas I have. There's a lot I'd like to explore about game development, such as cross-platform development (which can be daunting to look into). If there's ever a point where a new fangame makes sense to make, then I'd likely go for it.
That's all for now. Thanks for reading, thanks for playing, and thanks for coming along on this fangame journey.
But what's this?
