Hi Space Octopus Fans,
It's been a bit since the last update and we wanted to make sure to give a look into what's been happening and what to expect. TLDR: We are still working on the game.
Things have taken much longer than expected because life happened for all of us in various ways at different times with new jobs, weddings, etc.
We worked hard to the end of last year and got a playable build out to some people for playtests. This was a huge milestone for us and getting that feedback was critical. Even though the game is still small, though bigger than our Game Jam games, we want to make sure it is polished and complete as possible. Going through this playtest process gave us some major insights.
The game had an identity crisis that was holding it back. We were trying to do dialogue and story like Do You Copy? while also making a more open-ended experience, but they came at odds with one another. We had to decide what was most important for this game and so we came up with some goals to guide us to the finish line.
All the goals boil down to:
Open Ended Discoverability
In this game, you play as a detective trying to figure out the mystery in front of you and we focused the mechanics around that. You will be discovering the story and characters in a similar manner by exploring the world, finding clues, and piecing them together.
Where are we now?
We are functionality complete. This means all the gameplay is representative in some form. We had to tear some things down and rebuild them. With a better understanding of our goals, this allowed us to focus our systems and things are coming together much smoother.
Our next goal is content complete. With some of the changes, we need to add and slightly redo some of what we have. Then after that, it is focusing on polishing and bug fixing.
It's still a small game, but we want to make sure it has what you would expect. From Rebindable Keys, Full Graphics and Audio options, to Controller Support.
Thank you all for your patience. This game became more complex than we set out for it, but that is because we want to deliver something special. We hope it is worth the wait for you.
Also here is something fun to help tide you all over.
