Akira here!

I have a new idea (for my games)! (Please read the article below)

Which should I use, GameMaker Studio or Pixel Game Maker MV?

Akira here!

You see, the money that I can raise in that four-month period (yeah, the same four-month hiatus that I announced yesterday) is also enough to buy GameMaker Studio 2 (Desktop version on Steam). You know, both programs are quite similar (both utilize visual programming, both are easy to use), but which shall I choose? Please read the comparisions below to help me choose my decisions:

PGMMV:

Pros:

  • Can be used to easily create action-based games (bullet hell shooters, Metroidvania, etc.)

  • Have a demo version to try out the features of the software

  • Cheaper than GMS2, and when it is on sale, it is WAY CHEAPER than that.

  • Games can be exported to the Nintendo Switch

Cons:

  • It's very new (released about three years ago) so there might be not enough comprehensive resources for me to create a fully functional bullet hell game.

  • Can be quite cluttering to use (Node and link-based scripting, compared to GMS2's easier Drag-and-Drop scripting

  • Can only have one-click export to Windows; Switch exports need approval.

GMS2:

Pros:

  • Easy to use, have been known for its use in hit games (Undertale, Deltarune)

  • Have a demo version to try out its features

  • Simple Drag-and-Drop scripting, user-friendly interface

  • Multi-platform support, can export to many more platforms in one click

  • Have been supported for about more than 20 years and have a lot of useful documentations and tutorials to start with

Cons:

  • More expensive (even if it is on sale), requires YoYo Account to start (Don't worry, I have a YoYo Games Account)

  • My trial (demo) license have expired last year, so I can't prove that it is easy to use right now (When the demo license was still valid, I accidently access the GML (GameMaker Language) straight from DnD (Drag-and-Drop) so I think GMS2 was useless)

  • If I want to make more advanced features, I need to learn GML (It might take some time; but luckily, GML is said to be easier than the other programming languages used for engines such as Unity)

  • I tried DnD (Drag-and-Drop; GameMaker Studio's visual scripting language), but nothing happens even if I put the code blocks I would need for the splash screen to title screen thingy.
