Hello everyone.
I don’t post much here on my GameJolt devlogs. So, I understand if anything you may have read on this devlog doesn’t make much sense, here’s an explanation.
At the time of writing, the GameJolt logo is a grayscaled Hybrid Chicken from Poppytail 3. “The Poppytales” can refer to two games. The Hybrid Chicken logo came from a character select screen in the first.
In 2017, around the time I was starting to make Poppytail 4, I started the first “The Poppytales” under the work-in-progress title Poppytail RPG. Because that’s all it was at the time. It was going to be the first of many parts to eventually build up a larger RPG. The first one was only going to include fifty characters.
(These were Poppytail, Easter Bunny, Gremlin Girl, Snarly Dog, Lizard Hunter, Enderguy, Pink Poppy, Batwingz, Towelwich, Vulcangoat, Nykolas, Mama Tyranno, Papa Tyranno, Lulu, Mousetrap, Eclipse, GamePrint, Beachtime Poppytail, Poppy, Bun-Bun, Gremma, Smiler, Lizard’s Friend, Liz-Liz, Pork Chop, Orangu Tan, Doughy Duck, Mr Battery, Auto, Abe, Hybrid Chicken, Joey Turnbull, Wicked Poppytail, Wicked Easter Bunny, Wicked Gremlin Girl, Wicked Snarly Dog, Wicked Lizard Hunter, Cheesestick, Jawlock, Nursina, Exister, Shyyon, Vehicle Dummy, Dingo Cool, Bad Bunny, Cinder, G’day Gecko, Skelisa, Binary and Petal).
Keep in mind this was before I considered releasing Century Game or making anything like Easter Fun, A Game About Trimming Hedges, Poppytail 4: Special Edition or anything like that.
That game is no longer being worked on. At that time I now realise I had no clue what to do and it was just bad. It used the art from the original games that a lot of people didn’t really like.
The second “The Poppytales” is this one. The hand-drawn monster-collecting RPG, containing many characters from the following books and games:
The World of Elecreatures (2015)
The Bottomless Handbag and Boompaint Island (2016, Elecreatures 2, was never finished)
Poppytail (2017)
Poppytail 2 (2017)
Poppytail 3 (2017)
Poppytail 4 (2018, made 2017)
Century Game (2018, made 2017)
Easter Fun (2018)
Poppytail 4: Special Edition (2018)
A Game About Trimming Hedges (2018)
A Game About Trimming Hedges: Final Version (2019, upcoming)
Poppytail 5 (2019, upcoming)
Pixeltail (2019, upcoming)
One Million (2019, upcoming)
Now, the final character roster is 570 characters. I might add more, but only under the condition I finish the 570-character version and then the other ones will be added as some sort of DLC if I want to make it after going through this nightmare.
Even though I call the game a nightmare, I still want to make it. RPGs are one of my favourite kinds of games, and I’ve wanted to make one for a long time before I started game development with Stencyl.
Now, after I finish TPT, the characters for a potential DLC would come from an upcoming papillon book (I’m going to try going back into writing books again), future Poppytail sequels (Pixeltail will not be the finale to the series), an update to One Million (which would probably be just to add more playable characters) and any future small projects I make.
Now, I’m not making any promises about a DLC, and the base game is already ridiculously ambitious, but I have been thinking about a sequel and I already know what the story would be.
All of this really depends on a variety of factors: whether I can keep up my motivation, whether people are interested in the game, whether anyone wants a DLC or a sequel, and the amount of time doing all of this will take.
Everything starts as being hand-drawn, and I’m just one person making all of this on my own (at the moment). I might see if I can get other people to work on the game (which would probably be for composing music or sound effects; I want to do all of the art myself).
The game still isn’t playable, as I’m working on art assets (and I have quite a lot done) and I still have a few other game projects.
Hopefully the game will be out by 2022 at the latest. If you want to see any updates about The Poppytales, check out http://community.stencyl.com/index.php/topic,56318.0.html.
