DELTARUNE: RESURGENT STAR - Winter 2022 Update

HELLO AGAIN

Today I have a few things to talk about, mainly plans for the coming weeks, and the past and future of this project. This will be a smaller post, as we already have Devblog 3 coming soon. Today marks the 1 year anniversary of this project's predecessor "Alterdune" being cancelled. This was due mainly to all the game files being lost, but also a general loss in interest and motivation. Earlier this year, we decided to bring back the project. This turned out to be a good choice, as we've already surpassed the progress of the original project in just a couple months.

PROGRESS

Speaking of progress, I'd like to provide an update on that. Our main focuses have been story, music, art, and mapping so far. I believe we're about 60% through mapping out all the rooms for the Golden Sands! Now, there's still a lot of work to do in the other areas of the game, of course, but I'm happy with our progress so far. The story outline for the golden sands is also largely complete, there's just the matter of scripting and implementing everything. Music tracks for the Golden Sands are also mostly complete. Sprites and tiles for the characters are still in progress, though.

THE PAST

Alterdune, as it was called, was originally a one-off idea, but it evolved into a full on fangame within a month. We had made a bit of progress in the game, but a lot of the focus back then was story planning and the occasional sprite or music track. Another issue was not knowing what engine to use, at the time (right after deltarune chapter 2) there was little info on deltarune fangame creation. We decided to use RPG Maker, at least temporarily. It was a huge hassle to work with, especially with how the sprites and tilesets were laid out. Not to mention, we had no idea how to recreate the battle system accurately. All this lead to the game being cancelled.

A lot of these issues were solved with the revival of the project, such as discovering the Kristal engine. Since then, we have made significant progress.

THE FUTURE

I am very hopeful for the future of this project, and I am confident that it will be completed. The plans are for the game to have 3 chapters, the length of each one is estimated to be about the same as deltarune chapters so far, but it may be shorter or longer depending on the chapter. Before any chapter fully releases, however, we're planning on releasing a public demo for anyone to try out. Before it's released to the public, we want to have it be playtested to make sure everything is working as intended. The demo is still a while away, though.

In the more immediate future is the plans for this winter! On the 12th, Music Monday will come back for 3 more posts, ending on the 26th. Sometime after, Devblog 3 is also planned to release. We have some interesting things prepared for both..

After Devblog 3's release, though, we want to focus more on development, and getting the demo completed, so updates might be slower from then on.

CONCLUSION

Make sure to check out Music Monday No. 4 on the 12th! I've prepared another short gameplay video for it. This post ended up being longer than planned, so you can consider it Devblog 2.5, haha. Also, dev applications are still open, you can apply here.

That's all for now, see you all on the 12th.
