jolly 4's Monthly Progress Updates (+ a rant about the Jolly 4 script)

The developers of JOLLY 4 posted in their public community Discord server monthly progress updates from all parts of their development process. despite it's missing october (i didn't found it on the FNAF Fangame Wiki) I decided to publish all those images because apparently you liked that post where I listed cut or unimplemented contents of jolly 4.

in the august update, you might see some missing words so i decided to decipher what was meaning

RED: passed

YELLOW: tested

PURPLE: examined

BROWN: intelligence

BRIGHT PURPLE: weekbefore

GREEN: threat?

BLUE: purposefull?

WHITE: failed

after you saw those images, you might hear my a rant about the Jolly 4 script.

you already know that in my opinion, the script went too far from the previous JOLLY games.

So first of all I want to tell you something. Now more than listing the reasons why a fan game maybe didn't convince me, I tend to tell you what I think could have been done to make it better. It's a bad habit that throws my opinions into the realm of the impossible because in reality it makes no sense to discuss what could have happened and what will never happen.

It's just that I'm not really a reviewer. A critic.

I'm more of that friend who after playing a fan game that he didn't like says to you "but wouldn't it have been better if they had told this story here if they had done it this way?"

Let's be clear. Jolly 4 is not bad. It is not a disastrous game. As you might expect. Especially after the constant changes in game engine and the pear controversy.

Jolly 4 is a bit bland but it did some good things. It's a little more true than maybe other games given the gap in quality. it had the goal to give the players a true ending. a bit like Cabin Fever 2.

if the ending was cliche and anti-climactic, while also not making sense, jolly 4 would be the greatest game of the Jolly saga.

There's a lot of work to be done but the basics are excellent.

about the script... well what the hell?

from over 40+ different, overly gruesome and over the top child deaths (a quarter of which would be on-screen deaths), and a a homophobic Tweetie Goodtime line, It looks like it was written by Benioff and Weiss. (Game of Thrones Screenwriters)

however, I really like that Theo cared about Jack at the beginning of the story.

Too bad that Jack is killed immediately at the beginning of the story. First in Jolly 3, he breaks his ass to save his skin from broken robots and a walking corpse and here you throw him back dead from the beginning. Proof that Whesek really doesn't know how to use the characters.

theo's motivation Indeed is more stupid than usual. what you expected from a 34 year old factory.

that's where my problem with this script lies. in my opinion Jolly 4 deserved something better and even more limited and personal.

something capable of concluding the saga in the best possible way.

let's see: you are IvanG and you need to relaunch jolly after jollibee's copyright problems. Some people think it has already been done with Popgoes. which in reality In fact in my opinion it has only caused a distortion of the public perception on the Fazbear Fanverse. (in fact kane continues to promote his stuff as if he was hungry for attention like never before) so what do you do to valorize Jolly 4? What is your strategy to convince the public jolly 4 is your magnus opus? but obviously you have Whesek write it while he was in his edgy phase.

then what's the deal with the Darwin-Fleischer Medical Research Institute with Jolly Entertainment? sell kids's organs?

This detail would apply to Fazbear Entertainment. i mean it would have sense if it was Fazbear Entertainment that sold organs to the Institute and not Jolly Entertainment. that would make sense william afton.

william in jolly's story, only serves to give eric the motivation to search for his daughter in a series of events that will lead to both his wife's death and his own death.

and then about the deal with the Institute... there's no plot or motive behind any of that like... I'm confused, what's the reason for the deal. discover eternal life and live forever? and you build robots to murder children and sell their organs to them? that's horrible!

you know what would have been much cooler in my opinion? a story about corruption. you understand, right?

where a random person finds himself involved in a situation that puts the fate of the company in the balance with a traitor who has tampered with the animatronics to ruin the reputation.

like in INPUT6 (a game i discovered on march 2nd while i was fixing the errors in this post. it has a confusing and fragmented gameplay but the story seems to come out of jolly 4.)

let's fantasize a little.

let's close our eyes and imagine this game together.

"You have been tasked to work in a facility to guard a rebranded version of the beloved animatronics of Jolly Entertainment. However, you aren’t just here for the paycheck. You have a greater purpose here. a virus is making the animatronics agressive. you are here to find out who did this and how to stop this. the protagonist then finds himself in a situation where the fate of Jolly Entertainment is in his hands. and as he makes his way night by night, he begins to slowly uncover why the animatronics were hijacked and who hijacked them."

ok yes it's a simple plot but it would have put us the choice to let Jolly Entertainment die or not.

and in this part I'll give advice from a nobody, for the alternative version that will never exist, of a game that will probably never come out.

remove the child deaths, spare jack carson and use the Chief Investigator as protagonist. don't make Kevin Johnson a bland corporate copy of william afton. make Tal goodtime acting like a true psychopath during night 6 or in a dedicated boss battle with him. Tal wanted to be like G-Man and the only way to defend himself is to hide the desk? but give more defense mechanics.

keep the Gen 2 animatronics as easter eggs or Custom Night-exclusive antagonists (i was expecting Withered Jolly as a Custom Night-exclusive antagonist.)

and above all, remove the Darwin-Fleischer Medical Research Institute deal thing.

ok got it you need something that would bring down Jolly Entertainment. then don't tell me you sell children's organs. take away the Darwin-Fleischer Medical Research Institute that only exists as a plot device and write a parallel plot piece where Oliver did something in the past that he regrets and that would bring down Jolly Entertainment. with his son Kevin unaware of the grave mistake that his discovery would lead to his death. maybe it has something to do with William Afton. William Afton was fully aware that he had rehired Eric, and he devised a plan to have him disposed of while he was on the ship. He spoke with Oliver Johnson about allowing Classic Jolly and George to automatically switch between their hostile mode and their docile/entertainment mode, and he obliged, making it so that specific lighting would cause the animatronics’ programming to immediately initiate the robot’s hostile mode.

so a smaller ending that instead of copying shitty ideas from TRTF5, is inspired by the elements of those corporate dramas like Not For Broadcast or INPUT6 (actually Not For Broadcast is a propaganda simulator but there is also a pinch of corporate drama) a concept like that would have allowed the Jolly saga with a script that didn't went too far from the previous JOLLY games. then I continuously had the feeling that the game would like to slow down for an expository post-night. i mean, i like the idea of it but it's like jolly 3 and whesek didn't liked jolly 3's Post shifts.

It's still a step in the right direction. I don't know, I hope my point is clear I repeat, it's not a review, more of a reflection. a chat about what could have been done compared to what has been done. very last thing, come on, you eventually die from getting hit by an overhead sign in the Coward's Ending?

for now, let me know what you think and I apologize for this long rant... it would have been better if I made it for a separate post.
