Labyrneath II

Before I begin on this review:

My apologies to my followers that I was quiet for too long in the reviewing work. The work on the Star Story remake was at a point that it took a lot of energy out of me, and it will likely come to no surprise that all the lockdown crap due to a certain virus, also got the best of me at times.

I hope I'll have more time to review soon. Anyway, I can make a quick review on "Labyrneath II"

Review:

Labyrneath II is a game I just stumbled upon on Game Jolt. It is a rather simplistic set up platformer game, in whicn you take on the role of a kind of sexy female Indiana Jones like character and have to explore dungeons. As far as I found out (but I shall admit I didn't yet finish the game) you won't obtain any weapons, so you will have to puzzle out the best way to go and avoid anything that could kill you. Since you only have 1 HP anything will basically do so.

Now this all taken in mind, you may expect a boring game, but that is not how I experience the game. Actually the game can become quite a challenge at some points even to the level of pure frustration. This is therefore the kind of game that you must always know when to stop, as the drive to get further can make the game pretty addictive or get yourself out of control at times. Both will undermine your focus and focus is what you need. The game has however loads of checkpoints where you'll respawn whenever you get yourself killed and you got unlimited lives.

Now I like the music in this game and since you can only walk and jump the controls are very easy to master. The game supports both arrow keys as the WASD controls so you can control the heroine the way you prefer.

Although the graphics (particularly the ones used for level design) may look a bit simple the game does show eye for some details, like the trees scrolling faster or slower in the background to create the illusion of a 3D effect, and the ponytail of the heroine moving as she jumps and stuff like that. And I must also say, as I do remember the old platformers in the DOS era... It feels to me also a bit like "coming home".

Now the way the heroine is depicted in both the game's banner as in the main menu, might attract some players and feel a bit offensive to others. I would say, don't bother it too much and focus on the game itself.

All-in-all, the game appears to do what it was set out to do. Offer a challenge, in which quick acting and thinking is required. One tip, there are several spots in these levels where the enemy cannot hit you yet you can see a bit of what the situation is. Use your rest there to analyze properly and think of a plan. The game does feature a level where some tutorials are written on the wall, so you can get well on the way, and it starts easy and will build up the the more challenging parts quickly.
