Heya, I started replaying some old FNAFb games that I've played like 10 years ago according to my obtained trophies date and started with the OG FNAFb Final Mix, considering it got final updates that was a good idea imo. Also I needed it to find some insparation for my game (spoiler: it didn't do shit). I decided to do a review to the games to spit out my opinions as a mental relief.
You'll probably see this in the FNAFb Community posts, so I has to ask: is it ok if I'm gonna post it here as well as in my profile?
Ok then, here we go! (this one's gonna be a long post, so if you're not in a mood to read all that shit, there's tl;dr in the bottom)
Introduction
It's all started 10 years ago. My introduction to the series started probably like with the most of the people of that time: throughout Markiplier videos. I liked what I saw and I downloaded the game. I never actually played any jRPG before that so you can tell, that FNAFb was my introduction to the genre. Funnily enough the day I started playing FNAFb 1 I also managed to buy Cthulhu Saves the World (and also Breath of Fire VII and Penny Arcade's long ass name 3-4, even tho I only played Cthulhu one) so you can say FNAFb and Cthulhu was my first jRPG games.
Gameplay
Yeah, it surely does feel like the first in the series. Barely any side activities, pretty straight-forward gameplay. Oportunity to get an OP weapon from the start is cool (even tho final updates made a way to delay it a bit which is not fun imo). Without going for the 100% content Night X can be completed in like half an hour if you know what you doing. I don't mind that, especially since all the fun is on the side and to get it you have to grind a bit.
I also adore the fact that in all OG FNAFb games you have pretty simple objective. Shit on all cameras and get somewhere for the final fight.
Skills
Obiously all playable characters has its own set of skills so I also want to spread my opinion on them.
Freddy
Tophat Toss: goto skill whenever you have mana. Simple and useful;
Lead Stinger: I dunno about that one. Did the final updates changed the chances? I swear I haven't gotten a single poison inflict on all of my uses. Anyway, as far as I remember it used to be an OP stuff 'cause the poison was endless and dealt 10% of damage which is INSANE. Yeah, I know, it got nerfed and it's a deserved nerf. Also, the base damage fucking sucks;
Toreador March: damage on that one isn't that useful on it's own (150 dmg 9 times), but this skill is rather a gamble for the sleep effect on the last hit. I don't see the way to ever use it unless you got no options left.
Bonnie
Bunny Hop: pretty low damage skill correlated to its laughably lot mana cost. Deals just enough damage to be a lil' bit more useful than base attack. Also has a stun which got fixed in the final updates and more valuable than sleep (even tho it lasts only like 1 turn);
Backup Bash: now we're fuckin' talkin'! This is probably the second most used skill in all the skills. 16% chance to one-shot or deal like 80% of enemy hp damage? Yeah, we gamble. This skill is also the reason why higher difficulties can be playable. The ultimate cheese, just hit the MAX WIN ULTRA GOLD JACKPOT.
Guitar Smash: from one of the most used skills to the least one. This skill is so controversial so I can't even think of a situation you'll even use it on. Yeah, it deals a lot of damage and ignores DEF, but you loses your equipped weapon (or all fucking weapons before final updates). It could've made sense if you would be able to equip a weapon mid-fight, but you can't. Also losing a Kingly or Godly weapon for dealing the same amount damage that Backup Bash can do is sounds dumb to me.
Chica (well that's gonna be a short one)
Fearless Flight: funnily enough Chica doesn't have any goto skills. It could've been this one, but the way it works... It deals more damage the weaker the enemy is. But what's the fucking point of that if you can just Scream. Since it's the weaker enemy they'll probably weak enough to die in one hit from base attack. So what's the point of this skill then?
Pizza Pass and Caffeine Revival: just heal and revive. Much cheaper than pizzas and cakes. You can use in outside the fights which is great.
Foxy
Plank Walk: since Backup Bash is the second most used skill, Plank Walk should be the first. 40% chance to paralyze ANY enemy? HELL YEAH! Also considering Foxy has the highest AGI of the group it makes it lot more useful;
Speed Share: it used to be just a nice bonus for the party that might help with getting further in the attack order, but with the final updates it got... weirder. Now you ACTUALLY share your speed with everyone, but that makes Foxy the slowest one in the party which is not what you want since Plank Walk exists. I dunno, I don't see me ever use that again;
Rushdown: helluva expensive skill that deals fuckton of damage. Only makes sense if you juiced up your sinful shanty with lots of MP boosts.
Boss fights
Puppet: we all know that at the begining Puppet wasn't considered beatable and had fazbillion token as reward, but, yeah, Puppet is strong, but, come on, you have Plank Walk (this literally can be said about any boss in the game). Better than the fight with Puppet is the way it works in the game. Putting up a countdown that makes you nervous all the time especially if the fight is getting stalled like hell is such a big brain decision devs did. Good thing you can wind up the timer.
Toys: putting a combo skill behind the hard fight is another big brain move. But also how poetic the fight is: you fighting your plastic doppelganger, the twisted and controlled reflection of you. Absoute cinema.
Golden Freddy and The Puppetmaster: obligatory final boss and true final boss. I like cliche of the most (or half-most) frendly character turning out to be the big main bad guy. Also, The Puppetmaster supposed to be one of the hardest bosses of the game, but if you got through Interior Walls The Puppetmaster is probably gonna be wiped out pretty easily.
Interior Walls (and also Super Secret Room)
About the Walls themselves. The somewhat secret location that unlocks after obtaining all Kingly weapons and destroying all cameras. Cool dungeon with clever oxygen mechanic and roulette table that throws you back at spawn. The enemies are much stronger in here (especially these fucking Aces of Clubs). You'll probably spend a lost of time here to get all Godly weapons and some boosts. The music is nice, but after LITERALLY hours of grinding there you just wanna make it stop. Boss fight at the end if fun even tho it's hard. But there's one little thing that buggers me. You see, devs added a super secret room in Pirate Cove after you beat Interior Walls with all Godly weapons equipped. This secret room has an enemies that drops Kingly and Godly weapons pretty frequently which might help you grind tokens pretty easily, but... WHAT'S THE FUCKING POINT?! At this point of the game what is left for you is to fight Golden Freddy and The Puppetmaster which isn't hard fights at all. Idk, maybe it's the reference to something.
Night XX and Night XXX
This is horrendous. There's no point to play these difficulties unless for the achievements and GOOD FUCKING THING Night XXX doesn't requires to beat it (unlike other games). I never felt so frustraited like in Night XX. Both these difficulties are beatable with simple statement - if Backup Bash hit, then proceed, else F12. It's nice for the bonus content, but FUCKING ACHIEVEMENTS is my weakness.
Q and W Scenarios
Also great way to add bonus content to the game is a somewhat secret gamemodes. Holding Q or W allows to play different characters that gets in a little bit different situations is a great change of pace. In Q scenario we play as BB recruiting Toys (except Mangle 'cause fuck this bitch) and Puppet. The objective is the same, but instead of the credits you'll get yessssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss (~you're the best, around~).
W scenario is where you play as a Vile. Aaaaand this scenario one huge ass lore drop. Cool idea that you get stronger with every book you read that spaws after you beat a camera.
Like I've said, bonus shit is good. But it's good as long as it's give a new experience. Which it is in this case.
Graphic and Music
With this one I'll probably make a shout out to the whole series, because repeating myself second and third time with the same opinion is pointless.
Graphics is partially selfmade and partially is edited from the official FNAF games which is, duh... it's FNAF fangame after all. Even tho, the graphics made by the devs is looks cool and still being used by the community speaks volumes.
Music was taken from different games and other media is nice. Some tracks are living rent free in my playlist since 2015. Electric Eye and I'll Face Myself also such a poetic choise. Once again, absolute cinema.
That's probably everything that I wanted to share on the game that I used to play as a teen and decided to replay it so many years later updating my memories and refreshing my opinion on the series as a fully grown up person with the deeper experience in gaming.
TL;DR
I still enjoyed the game even tho it's more of a testing ground for the newer and better iterations of the games. This game is an important part of the internet and especially FNAF culture.
If I would've made a tier list this is probably would've been a solid A-tier game. It's not like it's not good enough for the S-tier, it's just the next games are THAT better. Anyway, for the first game that is 10 years old it's a pretty nice result, dontya think?
So, thank you for reading this long ass essay or scrolling down for the tl;dr. I hope you won't mind me posting these long reviews from time to time. Hey, as long as there more different opinions, people have something to discuss. So if you want to discuss something about my review you'll be welcomed in the comments.
Seeyaaa~
