My opinion about Envy(N X V obviously)
So as none of you know(because I’m irrelevant), I’m a former Envy shipper and die hard Nuzi shipper but I felt the need to make this post.
Specifically because Envy is the most misunderstood ship ever. In fact, while I am a Nuzi shipper all the way, I will say that objectively Envy has more lore significance than you can possibly imagine here.
I understand that a lot of Envy fans are sad that Envy isn’t happening, but please allow me to explain what most people miss and why Envy wasn’t wasted but instead was perfectly subverted to create something much more beautiful, meaningful, and perfect than the ship itself would have been.
So what is this misunderstood detail that makes it so important? Simple, how it drives development and forces the story to move along at a more realistic rate without even without calling attention to itself.
Now in order to explain this, I do need to announce a major issue with Envy. Envy is inherently toxic, not due to it’s own nature, but due to the mind state of V and the choices she felt forced to take to prevent N.
The thing is, V cares about N more than you can imagine. We know from Eternal Dreams(which is about both V and Uzi) that V was suicidal after the massacre at the Gala, but she kept going to help N despite everything, a showing of selflessness under her normally selfish attitude. However V did it the wrong way, she did it by hiding things from N and even cruelty to make sure her persona didn’t crack.
V is a deep character, and the truth is that she’s also driven by fear. She knows too much, and she’s far more afraid than N or Uzi, so much that she always pretends to be someone she’s not and continues to throw up a persona to not address her fear or trauma and she tries to deny this fear for N in her own way.
The thing is, V’s way of protecting N was inherently toxic and this slowly lead to N needing to stand up to her and their relationship shattering as N’s crush fades and he grows apart from her.
V understands this, I think she even knew it ahead of time which is why she was so disgusted by the growing relationship between N and Uzi overtime.
This reaches it’s climax in episode 6. V got over her bitter feelings to Uzi, she trusted Uzi to take care of N the right way. As I mentioned before, V already wanted to die, but was forced to live to protect N(a selfless but also toxic situation), and at the end of ep 6 V finally reaches the end of her dream and gets what she wants. N has a chance to be safe and happy, and she gets to be free and no longer has to live in fear.
This is why I both dislike shipping Envy and revere it, it has toxic foundations that should never be allowed to stay, but it is the direct ancestor to Nuzi who passed the torch.
due to what it means and it’s unique ability to have it’s cake and eat it too, with the ship not reducing anyone’s character but somehow developing them all to a level beyond what they’d ever be otherwise it is incredible to say the least.
So final verdict: In my opinion, actually shipping Envy is misunderstanding the point, however it is much greater *due* to not being the real ship.
