Over the last few days, we’ve been working hard on updating the Inventory system and UI in general. This change was motivated by a new set of features that we wanted the Item System to support:
Item processing and custom hover popup’s
One new feature that we wanted to bring to the item system was an ability for items to perform local processing. This enables us to make items far more interesting, by having them store their own data and equally to affect the game in more interesting ways. A few examples of items we want to add using this new system:
Dinosaur eggs that will hatch if kept well nurtured
Food/meat drops with unique quality properties that affect how much hunger they can replenish.
Seed bag/Fish basket mini inventories which allow you to extend the amount you can store in your inventory and help avoid you wasting valuable slots on common items. (Items such as fish are singular items and will not be stackable as they have unique properties such as size and species)
Utility item slots
Another new addition is the introduction of Utility items. Certain items have a utility function that can be activated on a key press. Previously, items such as this would only allow you to perform an action on the highlighted inventory cell. However the utility slots provide a slightly more convenient way for quickly utilising a range of items simultaneously.
These items involve toggle-able lighting equips (such as lanterns), consumable foods/potions/berries, utility items such as climbing ropes, etc;
Inspect feature
The final feature I want to talk about today is the inspect feature:
When hovering over certain areas, a prompt will appear allowing you to “inspect” something. This will have applications over a range of blocks/objects that exist in the game world. It will allow you to get information on something. The most common use will be for quickly evaluating progress on interactive objects such as campfires, farm crops, furnaces etc; The idea being that it is a little annoying to have to open up the full interface to check if something is cooked, so this will allow you to quickly check how things are going.
It can also be used for things such as reading signposts, searching dead bodies and more!
Thank you for all the support!
