"The Loss of Self" is a piece based on the ending to 1984. (Yes it's 'literally 1984', the irony isn't lost on me)
It centers around the concept and newly formed existential fear of mine created by my reading the book found at the ending in which (spoilers for the nearly 40 year old book) Winston is tortured into losing his identity and loving Big Brother.
The idea of your own personality and beliefs being altered into gross, twisted versions of them really disturbed me. They may have not killed Winston, but the Winston we knew from the beginning of the book is dead.
