First I sketched my idea. As you can see I drew up my vanishing point to establish the scene perspective, though that would only be for the backdrop scene-- the foreground scene will always end up looking like a side view platformer.
I used a bunch of references, especially Chrono Cross. It should be no surprise, since CC had one of the most beautiful beach and seaside backgrounds. I also took an underwater photo as additional reference because I wanted the foreground platforms to look like coral reefs.
The rest just builds upon the concept and inspiration. Add more details, colors-- the works.
I added another layer on top. I don't know how this makes sense, to have a pool of water overlooking a village, but maybe it's on top of a cliff. Anyway I tend to not think too much about this as this is for a game. I need the water to be there as it will be part of the game play.
I had posted this not long ago, but here's the final version. I will take screenshots of the in-game once I have it available.
