October 2020 - Happy Halloween!

Hello and welcome back to this month's (if a little late) devlog. So for this month, I will say out of the way progress was very small this week, so there really isn't much we can really show or say. Now I know, we keep having to be slow and slight in our progress and what we show to you, which can be something upsetting so for this devlog I thought why not break up some of the formula and go with a FAQ for you all to get a better idea of what we plan for this Undertale fangame. With that out of the way, let's get to the questions and answers....

TE! UTG FAQ

Q: What is you connection to other Undertale fangames? Particularly soul games? Will it connect with them at all?

A: More like 3 questions then just one, but they are all sort of the same thing. TE! UTG will not have any direct connection to any other Undertale soul games, such as Undertale Yellow, Migs's Undertale Green or Undertale: Kindred Spirits, etc (...unless?). While we admire and are inspired by these projects, and we are on good terms with them, we don't have any canonical connections or partnerships with any of them.

However (with the exception of Undertale Green...obviously) we will try to construct TE! UTG in a way that it will not clash 'canonically' with these other projects, allowing anyone who play multiple fangames to make their own idea of what the 'canon' journey of each of the individual souls will be. (So basically, we're not going to outline the journey of a soul like Purple to have to do certain events to fit in with our story, rather not touch on it too much).

While maybe some clashes may appear, we will try to make what does appear not destroy any chance of being roughly compatible. And if the opportunity arises, we'd love to through in an Easter Egg or two (or more seas only for this month, a trick or treat?) into parts of our game.

Q: How much of this game will actually be new compared to Undertale? Is this just a rinse and repeat with some splashes of new?

A: Apart from what has to be the same, such as the introduction in the Ruins, a bit of tutorial, etc, the story will hopefully differ to Undertale in any way we can manage. We will not be going over places you've been before, places you can already visit in Undertale. In what areas we may revisit we will be coming at them from a new angle, showing new parts of their respected areas, like in the Ruins, where our first area will be the currently mysterious True Ruins.

As we've mentioned, we are going to have a longer game than Undertale, with more areas and characters. While this is tricky, it will hopefully pay off in the end if we can do it right. We will also be having new battle and overworld features/mechanics.

Q: Are you taking anything from Deltarune? Mechanics? Features? Characters? Etc?

A: This is something yet to be properly discussed amongst the team, so the current answer is not very clear. However, there are a few things from Deltarune that we will at least take inspiration from.

Deltarune's battle mechanic will not be coming into TE! UTG, and instead we are keeping the traditional Undertale one. This is pretty obvious, as we are making an Undertale prequel game after all. Deltarune's overworld dodging is something a lot of other fangames have been adopting, however we have yet to decide if we would use these or not. If we will, it also will probably not be introduced until later than the beginning of the game. As for Characters, none of the Deltarune characters will appear in TE! UTG. However, that does not mean that we can't make references to some of them now does it?

When this is better discussed, we will be able to explain more about what we will or won't have instore from Undertale's sequel-spinoff-sister game.

Q: What new mechanics are being added then?

A: Now this has been lightly covered in the page's existing FAQ, but we can say that we have a few things planned which we can't at the moment divulge. But sooner to the time, we will hopefully have enough to make playing TE! UTG feel like a fresh experience (we hope).

Q: What's planned for the OST?

A: Fully original, in that every track will rather be new or remixed, making our whole OST different to Undertale. When tracks that don't spoil the story or parts of the game, or we aren't wanting to keep on to for releasing at the right time, we will show them off to you and add them to the OST. So far we have a few of the OST already on our Soundcloud and GameJolt page, but in future this will grow and you can enjoy more of what we have in store.

Q: So what's the plan, generally?

A: The plan is to make a good fangame, which we hope is worthy to be an Undertale prequel and the story of the Soul of Kindness. When we can show something, we will. We will try to make the wait for the demo or any other anticipated release in the future full of something to occupy you all as best we can, through one way or another. Really we are trying our best, despite things being very hard at the moment for everyone in the world.

Q: Seeing as this FAQ is from you, can we have one made up of fan questions?

A: Yes! If you comment down below your own questions, whatever they are (pertaining to TE! UTG that is, we're not answering your algebra homework) we will be happy to give you an answer in the next devlog!

Conclusion

Sadly this month, there is no Team Member of the Month, however there will be next month. I want to say a belated Happy Deltarune Day as well, which is now 2 years old (Chapter 1 that is of course). With Toby and his pack of helpers working to bring his vision to reality, we can do our best to help by waiting in anticipation for what new information the mysterious man will give us in future (perhaps an egg?).

We hope to bring more to you soon, and as always we end this with the usual affirmation we share. Keep showing kindness and stay determined!
