Progress Report - June 2022

Hey there!

As summer continues and the end of June draws near, we've been hard at work on TS!UNDERSWAP Demo v2.0. Much like last month's progress report, this one will be more short and concise -- outlining our current development priorities, what we've accomplished thus far, and our overall progress.

We've also brought on-board several new members for assistance with various content! Make sure to give a warm welcome to AnInternetsEcho, Captain Toad, DashingToadie, Datudou, Depresso, @IAmAnIssue , MrkySpices, Pixelated Engie, SmartCellist1, and Yamaduki!

Alternatively, if you're one of our new members and reading this, feel free to comment "Hey mom, look! I'm on TV!" (Don't do this unless you're a new member.)

If you'd like to stay up-to-date with when progress reports will be released, we highly recommend following us on Twitter! We generally provide updates on the status of monthly progress reports, retweet fanart, and post miscellaneous content.

That being said, let's go over everything!

Progress Updates

As a quick recap from our May 2022 Progress Report, our current development priorities with Starlight Isles have been as follows:

  • Wrapping up work on Stardust Woods major content.

  • Making Koffin Keep fully playable from start to finish.

  • Beginning preliminary work on Starstruck Village assets and writing.

Here's how each of these are going:

  • Stardust Woods' major content is nearly complete! There's just one sequence which needs finishing--as we've been focusing on Koffin Keep and beyond, this has taken a slight backseat for the time being.

  • Koffin Keep is now fully playable from start to finish, including all major writing, with the exception of some additional minor details (for implementation in the polish phase).

  • Starstruck Village is starting smoothly! We have an in-progress outline for the area's script and progression, a solid area layout, finished exterior assets for multiple sections (including buildings), various character sprites and overworld interactables, concept art for needed assets, and a work-in-progress theme.

In terms of our general progress since last month:

  • Writing -- Alongside writing for Starstruck Village, we've been having various brainstorming sessions for critical post-area writing and plans. This includes:

    • Further preparing for the start of Crystal Springs development -- outlining the start of the area, introduction of major characters, key sequences and encounters, and introduction of new gameplay mechanics.

    • Further development on the entire game's story at large, fleshing out less-developed sections and expanding upon existing ones.

    • General planning for various characters, critical plot points, and how different areas and characters connect to one another.

    • Discussing route-based plot points.

  • Artwork -- We've finished all major assets for Koffin Keep, and are working on assets for Starstruck Village.

    • All minibosses' attack assets have been completed, whilst major bosses' battle sprites and attacks have been further developed.

    • Much-needed assets for a Stardust Woods sequence have been finished.

    • All Koffin Keep NPCs have been made.

    • Assets for an original shopkeeper are complete.

    • Environment assets are being made as-needed.

  • Soundtrack -- We currently have 25 tracks completed out of a planned 32 for Starlight Isles!

    • There's also ~5 tracks nearing completion, and 2 others ranging from early concepts to not yet started.

  • Programming -- The entirety of Koffin Keep is functionally complete, and playable from start to finish with all major content and cutscenes implemented.

    • There are currently several rooms related to Starstruck Village implemented in-game, in very early stages of completion.

    • The final miniboss fight for Pacifist and Neutral has been implemented in-game, including its pre-fight and post-fight overworld cutscenes.

    • Various attacks have been implemented in-game.

    • An important Stardust Woods sequence has been fully implemented in-game, after needing to wait until its assets were complete.

    • Various code-related changes and additions have been made.

    • We've added the ability to toggle auto-run via selecting "Use" on the Running Boots in the KEY ITEMS menu!

Community Spotlight

It's time for this month's Community Spotlight!

We started these back in June 2021 to highlight community fanworks, and fellow fan-projects. (Wow, it's been a whole year!)

Fellow Fanworks

Starting off, we wanted to quickly run by some recent updates and announcements for several UNDERTALE-related fan projects!

Over the course of late May to early June, Inverted Fate released two brand new segments of its story -- "Skeletons in the Closet" and "Victory Lap!" It's important to note that these two animated videos take place around the end of the comic's New Home segment -- and because of this, you'll want to catch up with the comic before giving them a watch!

Around the start of the month, DELTATRAVELER released its June 2022 Progress update!

As of the time of its writing, v2.00 was approximately 82.5% complete! If you're interested in reading more about the progress of Section 2 (Earthbound) and Hard Mode -- including a video teaser for Hard Mode -- go and check it out!

Just recently, a brand new Twitter account was made for the fan-game "Omega Timeline: Poppy's Story - Poppy Goes To The Store To Buy Milk." This has since been accompanied by both an FAQ post (with answers regarding the game itself) and its very first devlog!

We definitely recommend checking these out if you'd like to learn more about the project, and read up on the main hub's iterative design process -- it's really interesting!

And finally for this section, Undertale Yellow released its June 2022 Devlog just a few days ago! We highly recommend giving this a read, but here's a general overview of what it has in store:

  • Development is going well, and still has a slated release window for this upcoming Winter (December 2022 - March 2023)!

  • The Neutral route became fully playable this April, though still requires work on polish and the game's other routes.

  • A preview of the game's third major area, "The Dunes," is given a look at -- with some promotional/concept artwork, the area's music, and several in-game previews!

We're really excited to see what the project has in store, and wish its team the best of luck!

TS!UNDERSWAP Fanworks

Now, let's go ahead and move on to some creations by our own fans!

Around the start of June, we made a Twitter post encouraging fans to re-imagine our character designs and explain the thought processes behind each deliberate change. This design exercise was meant to have people explore the same character design philosophies we've discussed -- and hasn't been limited to any specific cast members.

After looking through the #tsunderswapredesign tag on Twitter, we've decided to feature the following fan re-designs:

kopfsalat_scratch1.jpg
kopfsalat_scratch2.png

First, we have a fan redesign of Sir Scratchalot by KopfSalat -- including an overworld sprite!

His thought process behind the changes were as follows:

I thought the show host needed a costume like this and a cane to make him look more "old timey".

...And Napstablook's face. Yes.

Next, anxious_sage made some redesigns of Asgore, Chara, Mettacrit, Temmie, and Flowey! Each of the thought processes behind their designs can, conveniently, be seen alongside the designs themselves. (Saved us some time there!)

mrky_koffin-k.png

Prior to him joining the team, MrkySpices made redesigns for both Koffin-K and Koffin Keep! His thought processes behind the changes were as follows:

got a lot of time to kill, i've decided to redesign the koffin keep, want it to feel like a dracula/vampire castle, but not so gloomy of course

azman_crossbones1.jpg
azman_crossbones2.jpg

Zman made a redesign of Crossbones, complete with both concept art and a colored drawing! Their thought processes behind the changes were as follows:

Got a little compelled to post my very own take on crossbones. The starlight saviour.

Additionally I made some slight design changes on the costume to be more practical while also concealing his SECRET identity

If you're interested in this design exercise, make sure to check out our Twitter post -- which features information and character references -- and post your design + thought processes with the #tsunderswapredesign tag on Twitter!

That's everything for now!

We're really excited with the progress we've been making, and are looking forward to progressing further in development of Starstruck Village -- and eventually, proceeding to Crystal Springs beyond preliminary work.

See you guys next time!
