Progress Report - November 2020

Howdy!

Today, we have yet another smaller devlog--one of the last before we finally release, too! Since we're extra busy getting everything together, we can't promise another devlog next month.

With that being said, though, we hope you enjoy the exciting news we have for today!

General Progress

We have reached a 99.5% content completion goal for the demo. For all intents and purposes, all major content is functionally implemented in-game, with the exception of certain music tracks. After those are done, we'll be at 100% content completion.

Now, this isn't to say that we're all done! We don't want to release the demo with any bugs or unpolished features--we're still taking the time to make sure everything works, looks, and sounds nice. Everything's been going pretty smoothly! Here's a quick list:

General Updates:

  • Monster Attacks: All attacks have been added, and need final testing + polishing.

  • Demo Soundtrack: 27/31 themes for the demo are complete! Only 4 more to go.

  • Sprites: We're giving some sprites a bit of last minute polish, updating older ones to bring them in to our current style, and doing general touch-ups. Noteworthy examples include the Ruined Home NPCs, shading on overworld sprites, and lines on brick tiles.

  • Platform Ports: The demo is seemingly running smoothly on all platforms--PC, Mac, Linux, and Android. We're using a temporary fix to get the Mac build working, until we have a more solid one for the release.

  • Puzzles: Some puzzles have been adjusted based on playtester feedback. Unless we decide to polish something, they're all done!

  • Code Changes: A great deal of code has been refactored for better optimization, filesize space, and general improvements! We're making sure it hasn't broken anything important.

  • Credits: Completely added, just needs finalized music.

Per-Location Updates:

  • The Sewer: Backtracking content has been added, and is near completely polished.

  • The City of Old: All content has been added, near completely polished.

  • Asgore's House: Everything is seemingly finalized, and may be given last minute polish if needed.

  • Asgore Fight: The only things left are minor polishing, adding new SFX, and finishing up the finalized version of his fight theme.

  • Post-Asgore's House: You'll see in due time.

Release Updates:

  • Trailer: We planned out how we'd like the trailer to flow, and we're currently working on the groundwork for getting everything together. Stay tuned!

  • Localization Support: Everything is functionally complete, and upon release we'll be providing a public localization file for people to translate to their heart's content.

    • We currently can't confirm which languages, if any, will receive an official localization on release. We'll most likely be doing official localizations post-release for the demo.

    • You will be allowed to make your own community localizations, though we will have rules on distributing files. You will have to credit us appropriately, link to our project, and distribute ONLY the translation file.

  • Rules for Content Creators: We plan to have certain guidelines for whether or not you can monetize footage of our fangame. Since we're not making money off of this, we'd rather that others didn't--however, we currently plan on allowing people to do so, as long as:

    • It's transformative content (meaningful commentary, criticism, etc.) that falls under fair use terms

    • Gives us total and proper credit (linking to our GameJolt, displaying the entire credit sequence in gameplay videos, and not misrepresenting our fangame as just "Underswap" or by someone else)

    • You won't be allowed to monetize straight up footage of our fangame, without any genuine supplementary material.

    • Refusing to abide by these rules will result in a copyright takedown notice.

  • Release Date: Soon™.

Thank you so much to all of our playtesters, who have been giving us a lot of useful feedback! Because of them, we've been able to fix different issues, and improve existing content.

New Music!

In addition to a general progress report, we decided to upload some of the new seasonal themes for the extras menu! They'll change based on the current season.

First, we have Calming Beats to Reflect and Relax to 🌻! This calming song will play during the Fall and Spring seasons!

Next, we have Seaside Beats to Tan and Relax to ☀! This more exciting song will play during the Summer season!

Well, that's all for this devlog! We're incredibly excited for the demo's release Soon™.

Until then, I'd like to give my quick thanks to different groups of people:

  • The members of Team Switched, current and former. Without any of you, we would never have gotten this far. This project has been a huge part of our lives, myself included, for years--and I'm excited to finally see something playable come to light.

  • Everyone who has followed and supported this project, regardless of for how long it's been. Thank you for sticking around through thick and thin--we really hope you guys will enjoy the demo once it's finally out. We wouldn't be here without your support and love.
