Progress update


It's been months since last update and despite working hard on the game every day, I still don't have anything finalized enough that I'm comfortable showing on GJ. However people who join the Discord can see early models, renders, and WIPs as I post on there weekly if not daily.


This update is about my goals for the game and stamping out possible concerns .

Despite the love MA1 has gotten, there are some valid criticisms of the gameplay loop. The main problems being:

  • People never fully grasping how the mechanics work with each other.

  • Getting trapped in scenarios where you already know you're dead and still have to wait ~30 seconds to actually lose and try again.

MA2 doesn't have those either of those issues by design. As some of you know, MA2 actually recycles mechanics form one of my old, pre-Mary games from 2016. This will make the game much easier to pick up and play, but may also ruin it for some as it removes a lot of the depth that the first game had.

In order to make up for the shallower gameplay, I'm packing in more content. Scripted events during the night are returning, but there will also be new content such as customizable profile pictures, more character 'personality', different gamemodes, a secret code that unlocks extra content, post-night scenes, and much more music - btw, MA1's composer is returning for MA2.

(Obviously everything listed there is subject to change, but I'm really going to try to fulfill those goals.)

A lot of the love MA1 got was due to it's rigid 5 night older-fangame feel, and things like game-wide secrets and post-night scenes might not feel like they fit in a Mary game, but I assure you they being done in a way that makes them fit without feeling forced. If you're concerned about all that extra stuff being feature creep, know that I already have most of those things coded in with placeholders.

I swear once this skeleton is finally done and textured the rest of the game will come a lot faster. This thing has been a huge bottleneck to the point where I'm not sure the MA2 characters will even have internal mechs.

Mary's Arcade is officially the most "cinematic" fnaf fangame specifically because it looks like a crappy DVD extra where they show the unfinished animations and they're so bare bones you wonder how a finished movie came out of that.

All motion is fully IKFK rigged and keyable, now just to finish the meshwork and texture it.

Was wondering how the hell Mary's Arcade ended up the way it did and then realized the latter half of development was spent listening to this stuff. Makes a lot more sense now.
