Project Intro: Driftwood Harbor

Hello all,

I’m new to this site so I’m going to introduce myself first. My name is Will and I’ve been involved in software development, specifically web development for a long time. I’ve been working with Unity for almost a year, and have really started to enjoy . I’m currently working on a 2d pirate based rpg that I hope will one day become a multiplayer experience. I was hoping I could get some advice on the concept and the design.

I won’t get too in detail with my plans for this game but I’d like to make my intentions clear and open them up to criticism and new ideas. I plan on highlighting the features that will make this game unique. For now the game is going to be called Driftwood Harbor. I’ve taken inspiration from game such as Stardew Valley, Realm of the Mad God and runescape. I plan on doing everything I can to provide a unique gaming experience.

To put it simply the game will be a relaxed and fun pirate experience where players can enjoy looting, fighting, fishing and other fun activities. I want to offer both competitive and casual styles of play. Here are some of the unique features.

Despite being a pirate based game the majority of the game will take place on land in a world with various islands both small and large. Sea travel will be automated, however, there will be events such as random encounters with other ships or sea monsters.

Weapons, tools and loot will be generated in such a way that yields a large number of different possibilities. Based on the rarity of an item it’s statistics will be generated. For example a sword’s damage, knockback chance, and elemental damage could be determined based on an algorithm. Almost no two items will be the same making looting much more exciting and encouraging trade.

Another cool feature I plan to add will be immortal fruits(still not set on the name). As a very rare form of loot that can be found and when taken will grant the player with unique boosts, fighting styles and other perks. One example would be a fruit where the next time the player dies they are automatically brought back to life. (Think devil fruits in one piece, if you’re familiar with the anime/manga, except the powers are only there for a limited amount of time).

The pixel art is being created by my friend oscar, check out some more of his work here, https://www.odovedesign.com/ I will post some more pictures soon!

I have a lot more ideas but for now I’m focusing on the art/world design and the basic mechanics of the game. Some planned features include farming, fishing, island conquests, bounty system and much more! I’d love to get some input, or listen any ideas you all have for the game! Feel free to ask me anything either in this forum of via private message. For more frequent updates follow me on twitter! @DriftwoodHarbor.

Thanks, and have a great day!

Some time ago, we posted a screenshot of the Mexico level. A curiosity about it is that, like some other scenarios of the game, it was inspired by a real landscape, The Basaltic Prisms of Santa María Regla. It is one of the natural wonders of the country!
