Hey, I was looking back at some of my posts/comments/shouts, and I saw that a few of them were pinning down and insulting a persons fan game. And, a few of you might be wondering why I do, since most of the time, I do it with little to no explanation. No, this isn't an apology 'cuz to those I did call out, yeah, you're game is trash. This is just an inside opinion on why i think this way.
UNORIGINALITY. THATS WHAT.
Case one: The Patient-Zeros of UT Fan Games...
So, a big reason that I dislike a lot of Undertale fan games is the originality. For example, what I call Undertale Knockoffs (Underswap and Underfell are great examples). I do love both of these AUs, and I have my favorite fan games of these. However, these AUs have been crucified to shit. If you look up "Underfell" right now on GameJolt, there are over 200 results (at the time of writing). That's barely scratching the surface! Go on Google, and there's over 3,000,000 results! And for Underswap, there's even more! Look, I see that these AUs have their dedicated fan bases, but this is ridiculous. Imagine if I went on Scratch! Its a hundred times worse there, and there are even people here on GameJolt linking their Scratch projects of Undertale AUs. Its pretty bad, honestly.
Case two: The Clones...
Oh my god. If you took the worst disease known to mankind, and combined it with sans undertale, you get every Undertale Fan game that doesn't have over 100 followers. The clones that followed the creation of Undertale, Underswap, and Underfell were pretty horrid. There was literally a point where people made SwapSwapSwapFell. What the actual fuck?! And then, they get ultra salty when anybody critiques them! The amount of these clones are really bad. I have my choices on what I like and dislike, and they are all either fourth-wall breaking, slight alterations to the original timeline, or fan made sequels/prequels. Another thing that aggravates me on a whole new level is the fact that the most original fan games are always tucked away far in the back behind all this garbage! I am, however, happy that actual fan games with teams who love their work are at the top, such as TS!Underswap, UT: Yellow, UT: True Genocide, and UT: Last Breath to name a few. I have massive respect to the people who've made these titles, and their teams alongside them. However, a good few games with actual effort put into them are rarely ever seen. However, that last example actually rings a bell...
Case three: Stolen Content...
About 78% of Undertale fan games are made and ran on a custom made engine, and roughly around 50% of that 78% are stolen engines. (if you're wondering about that last 22%, those are mods of the original Undertale and Deltarune)
The Undertale Fan Game Dev community has a really bad rep of doing this. I've even had my fan game decompiled in the past. The amount of stolen code is really large in this community alone, probably ranking several million lines of code. I understand mods, but when someone decompiles ones work and passes it off as their own, I know from experience that their heart is crushed. Especially if that person has less of a reputation than the thief. I recently found out that even the beloved fan game "Undertale: Last Breath" was made on a engine used for a Disbelief adaptation, as well as stealing some of the attacks. I know. Hard to swallow.
Case four: Self inserts. Eugh.... disgusting....
A huge problem I have with about 50% of the bad Undertale fan games I've commented on is that they're self inserts. Look, I understand if you're adding yourself for comedic relief on select occasions, or as a side/secret character, but these. Oh ho... they bring it to a whole new level. In most cases, the creator is playing either the role of snas, Papyrus, or Chara. Why? It's so cringe worthy. Cameos: ok. Comedic Relief: ok. Major/Main character: WHAT THE ABSOLUTE SHIT?!
Case five: What the fuck are your attacks?
So, a HUGE problem I have with a lot of fan games is the lack of actually unique and fun attacks. Its either "Oh, Ima throw some more balls at you! Doge 'em if ya' can!" or "heya wanna have a bad time?? gaster blaster spam". Toby Fox is probably very disappointed.
*sigh
Anyways, the rants over. Please, actually understand. I'm not trying to throw hate or shame to anyone, it's just that this has been bothering me for a very long while. Ever since my game was decompiled, actually.
If any of you readers have ideas for any of these. DON'T. JUST DON'T. Try to make something more original. At least, this is my advice. Do whatever you please, but please, make better content.
Thanks for reading! Took a few hours to write. I feel very much relieved.
