Some writing for a contest that @Dynocation is hosting :)

I wasn't able to get around to writing something new so I pulled a bit of text from an old story I wrote a while ago when I was still in highschool. Hopefully those who read it enjoy the portion so far and I might post more of it after wards!

-----------------------------------------------------------

Bob gritted his teeth as he shook, wrapping his coat tight around himself as he walked with the little orange puppet fool, Pail, up the cold mountain trail. The snow covered trees surrounding him made it seem much colder while even more snow fell from the sky, occasionally landing on Bob’s uncovered head. He slowly turned his head to the puppet and saw that Pail wasn’t bothered by it at all. Well he was a puppet after all. He doesn’t have nerves or pain receptors to feel anything really.
“Y-you didn’t tell m-me it was gonna be f-freezin out here!”
Pail looked over in a confused manner with his bright and shiny button eyes as his content smile went neutral.
“...Yes I did. Didn’t you hear me say this was going to be a cool adventure?”
“W-what!? I thought you meant cool as in a-awesome!”
“Heheh, well that too. But uh, if you are cold, I could...uh...hm, I actually don’t know.”
“I-It’s fine Pail. I-I’ll just power through.”
“Oh! Maybe I could lay around your neck like what Guy does with his scarf!”
“N-no Pail, I s-said I’m-”
Without a second thought, Pail hopped up onto Bob’s shoulders and went limp atop him, making Bob sigh. He expected the weight of Pail to slow him down, except he almost felt nothing. Until now, Bob never really truly noticed how light and weightless Pail felt as he lay smiling around his shoulders. It was actually quite comfortable and began warming him up slightly. Huh, a puppet that can’t feel but can produce body heat. He supposed it was a good thing he didn’t let his stubbornness take control and force him off of his shoulders. Bob was slowly beginning to shiver less and was able to walk a tad faster through the frigid air towards their destination that lay somewhere ahead near the cliffside. Bob knew Pail thought visiting this old house would be interesting but he hadn’t really known why Pail wanted to go to this specific house in the mountains.
“How come you wanted us to go to this house again?” Bob began asking, ”I mean, it’s so far! We’re the only ‘adventurers’ around town so who else would travel all the way up here?”
“Exactly! Nobody else around town has been up here for a long long time! At least that's what I’ve been told by the others. So there’s got to be something good up here!”
“Well...If you really think it's worth lookin at then I guess there is somethin up there waitin for us to find.”
Pail smiled with excitement as the warmth radiating from his small, cloth body protruded more heat, providing more comfort to Bob.

They eventually arrived at the foot of the giant house’s porch where they were surrounded by the lawn's small trees, bushes, and lawn ornaments that consisted mainly of small, red and blue lawn gnomes. The shrubbery and other plant life looked fine, but the ‘aura’ emitting from them seemed pale and dead. Bob shuddered slightly at the observation while Pail, not concerned whatsoever, slid off of his shoulders and waddled his way up the steps to the front door.
“Cmon Bob! I wonder if anyone inside has some fun stuff to show us. Oo! Maybe they’ll be happy to see that people are visiting them!”
“Right...does this place seem a bit off to you at all?”
“Hm, now that you mention it...their lawn looks like it's growing out! Guess we’d better tell them before it gets out of hand.”
“Eheh…”
As Pail lightly hopped up and down in place, Bob slowly shuffled up the old porch steps to the door of the giant house with a look of caution on his face. He gazed through the colored glass window to the right of him where he could barely make out the couches and chairs in what seemed to be a living room or reading room. He also realized that there were no lights on within the house.
“Hm...judging from the lack of lightin in this place, I’d say there isn’t anyone home here.”
“Well, maybe they’re just sleeping! It’s pretty early in the morning after all.”
“I guess. I’m not really sure what's goin on with this feelin inside my gut, but it’s tellin me there's somethin wrong here…”
“You’re probably just hungry cuz you refused to eat breakfast.”
“Well my gut and I don’t like cereal so I don’t think so.”
“Well stop complaining and knock on the door then.”
Bob nodded as he stared at the worn down, wooden door and its rigid looking texture. It looked like it hadn’t been touched in forever with all the dust he examined on it. He was a bit disgusted by it, but took a deep breath and gently knocked with his small fist. However, as his fingers made contact with the door, it creaked open with no one behind it to introduce them or respond to their greeting. The caution on Bob’s face grew while pulling his hand back to his side. Pail was confused as well because of his expectation of someone to actually be there to open the door.
“Uh oh, looks like they forgot to close their door! Maybe we should go in and tell them!”
“What!? We can’t do that. Otherwise we’d be trespassin. Let’s just...get outta here. Maybe they’re out grocery shoppin or somethin.”
Pail frowned a bit as he watched Bob turn around and walk down the porch steps without hesitation or getting Pail’s own response. He looked back into the house to see its empty entryway without light.
Sigh, Well alright. I guess this adventure wasn’t going to be as fun as I thought…”

As Pail was about to turn away, a loud noise from inside the house caught his attention. It sounded like something fell from somewhere inside the house. He tilted his head as he continued examining the entryway, supposedly waiting for something else to happen or for someone to appear. Just as he was anticipating, something else did happen. A faint ball of turquoise light emerged from one of the rooms that connected to the entryway that was further inside the house. Pail’s button eyes widened while observing the interesting new discovery that stopped him from leaving and instead, slowly pulled him inside. Pail was too focused on the ball to realize that he was being forced inside as he called out to Bob.
“Hey Bob...look what I found.”
“Pail, I know how much you wanted this to be a great adventure and all, but I don’t think this old house is gonna provide us with much to explore.”
Bob turned to face Pail again only to see that he was now inside the house.
“Pail! What are you doin!?”
He ran back over to the puppet who was halfway through the entryway hall and attempted to pull him back, only for the door behind them to slam shut and lock tightly. They both held their breath as they let the sound of the door closing reverberate throughout the house and slowly turned to the glowing orb that happened to float next to them. Bob stayed silent and still as he stared at the orb in front of him, trying not to make any sudden movements or alarm whatever it was in front of them. He just froze with Pail in his arms. Pail looked up at him, waiting for him to say anything snarky or clever but just heard him begin to breathe in a shaky manner. He looked back down at the floating ball of light and then smiled.
“Hello!”
After greeting the orb, it immediately zipped away into the room it came from, making Bob jump slightly at its sudden escape. Pail then slipped out of Bob’s grasps and began waddling his way after the orb.
“Pail! What are yah doin? We shouldn’t follow that thing. We gotta get outta this place. It’s bad news to be stayin here…”
“Maybe that orb will lead us to something cool though!”
“Or it could lead us to our untimely deaths, and I don’t really want my end to be within this dusty box of a house.”
Pail stopped waddling and faced Bob as he saw the serious look of concern on his face. It was strange for Bob to act this way since he usually was the one wanting to press forward when on adventures. He was the one to be leading the entire expedition since he always wanted to be up front and ready for action. Pail noticed that this entire time he was actually constantly wishing to leave. He didn’t look at all like he wanted to press forward and deal with whatever was ahead. He looked like he wanted to run away.
“...Bob, are you scared?”
“What? Scared? No! I’m never scared! It’s just that...I dunno, this place...It’s got somethin different about it that just rubs me the wrong way.”
“Apart from the floating orb that flew away and the door that closed and locked us inside this seemingly haunted house?”
Bob’s eyes slowly widened at the fact that this house may indeed be haunted by some paranormal activity. He had never shown it or told anyone about it but, he has always been afraid of ghosts. He had always told everyone he wasn’t afraid of anything and he was able to prove that statement every time. Zombies? He’d think it was pretty cool. Witches? Well he’s dealt with plenty of them in the past so that wouldn’t do much at all. Ghosts however, would send a chill down his spine just hearing the word. He’s heard a lot about what ghosts can do and what they are capable of. They were able to haunt, terrorize, and even overrun entire towns by just scaring them away. His rival even told him about ghosts.

Oh I’ve encountered ghosts before. They are one of the most fearsome creatures that roam your world. If you happen to get on their bad side, they’ll do their best to make the rest of your life a living hell. You’ll be cursed to have them by your side forever while they terrorize you any time you’re awake. They can get inside your head and find out what can make you crumble like a weak wall. In fact, they’ll tear down all your emotional walls and make you collapse in due time. They’ll make you see things that no one should ever see. So even if you aren’t afraid, you should be. Otherwise they’ll give you a reason to.

He frowned and furrowed his brow as he thought more and more about the dangers ghosts could prove to be. He indeed had many things he wished he would not see. That’s why he just wanted to avoid this haunted house entirely. He couldn’t let Pail know that though. He can’t trust him to keep his fear of ghosts a secret. The moment they got home, Pail would be telling everyone around him about it and Bob would get laughed at by them. No, he couldn't let that happen to him or else his reputation would be ruined! He’d have to go back to being a newspaper seller, which he had not wanted to go back to any time soon.
“...Bob?”

“Wuh...oh, uh, y-yknow what? That bad feelin is gone now. If it’s just a g-ghost then I guess it’s no big deal. Cmon, let’s see where it ran off to.”
With that, he got up and began walking down the entryway to where the ball of light had fled. Pail smiled and let Bob take the lead like always and followed him from behind, skipping lightly out of excitement.

A great revelation,It feeds on your frustration, guilt, loneliness and isolation. He would be Jaguar Girl's faithful companion since she hated her life and wanted something better for herself.

How about another Fuuhl relative?
