Introduction
I just want to quickly say two things. One, thanks for deciding to read my review of the movie, it means a lot to me :)
Secondly, I am by all means no critic. I don't know how to properly review a movie or anything, so expect some mistakes. Without further ado, let's get into it
Story
The story is simple enough for the movie, while also never being too complex or confusing. The amount they were able to cover in the 92 minute runtime was incredible, and they pulled it off excellently. It was also for the most part, fastly paced enough so the viewer wouldn't get bored, but also had some slower paced heart-felt scenes sprinkled in. It also knows the exact time to check in on other characters in the story (e.g. I was wondering how Luigi was doing while watching, and the second I did it switched over to his Pov). They did also cut some scenes seen in the trailer a bit shorter, but it had no effect on the story. Overall, I have no complaints with this section, and they did a great job.
VA (Voice Acting)
Oh. My. God. The Voice Acting was over the roof. I was scared Mario would sound out of character, but I completely forgot Pratt voice him until it showed his name in the credits. The other characters like Luigi, Peach, Donkey Kong, Toad and etc. also fit very well. There wasn't a character I heard that didn't fit (in my opinion) and it definitely exceeded my expectations by a lot.
Music
The music was good for the most part. The remix's were amazing to hear, and Jack Black gave an amazing performance (also stick around for the first post-credits scene, it's worth it). There was also some weird songs in there (Holding out for a hero and Mr Blue sky, more notably), but you would be too distracted by the scene to really care about it, so I'll let it slide. There was also an epic song coming back from the N64 I was literally bopping to in the cinema (I won't name it just in case you don't know what it is, but here's the song just in case you don't care/you know what it is). Overall, the music was great with some nice orchestral remix's, just an oddball or two
Humour
The movie was pretty funny throughout, but also knew when to take itself seriously. I won't spend too long on this section as there's not much to cover, but in a nutshell the jokes weren't overtold or undertold, and always fit the scene.
Designs
Not much to say on this either. It takes a bit of getting used to, but after a while I liked the character designs more in the movie than the games as they're just way more expressive and bright. The environments and other items also fit well. Overall, they fit the movie's atmosphere, the sfx and voices well
References
They really hit the spot with these. There was big things, like outright characters from games coming back for a small section or two (most which you can see before even entering the mushroom kingdom), to smaller scaled easter eggs, e.g. pixel art for chests or power-ups from the old SMB games. They also referenced other series, like the Punch-Out series and Kid Icarus. If you don't get these references, it won't affect your opinion of the movie... but they are DEFINETILY a welcome addition
Personal opinion
I honestly think this is the best movie I've ever watched, I'd even dare to call it perfect (though the definition of "perfect" varies from person to person). It's very enjoyable for all ages, has a lot of heart to it and will be a great tool for converting your friends into Mario fans, as it will leave you longing for more. You don't even have to be a fan of the games to enjoy it. Overall, I would say ignore rotten tomatoes "tomato meter" (it's often inaccurate anyways), and give it a chance to see for yourself if you like it or not, but at the end of the day it's your own choice.
Outro
Thanks a lot for reading all this. If I made any mistakes, please by all means let me know in the comments. I hope if you do see it you enjoy it, and also if you already have. With that said...
Adios!
