The premise
Ever since I saw this fan game, I thought to myself "I wanna play this too one day, when it will be released!". Small issue... I have a Mac. I never even played the original, so how can I think of playing the fan game then?
So I started to do some research. I'll summarize real quick here. There are two ways to play Windows games on Mac essentially:
emulate/virtualize a Windows environment. Which... I tried. I seriously did. Did it work? No (you can see the PlayOnMac logo there, but no it's just the generic .bat or .exe logo placed by my Mac). Or, I mean, it sort of worked, but I had a lot of trouble setting everything up properly. Essentially, it's counter-intuitive, which is the last thing I want. Also, the better emulators/simulator cost real money and I'm not too fond of this
let the Mac translate it through a mediator, or in this case, a wrapper
That second way is what I went with in the end. The final result is intuitive enough and I like the approach.
The solution: Kegworks Winery
"Winery"? That's because it's based on Wine, the translator so to speak. Wine is what's usually running in your virtual machine, so why not directly use Wine? Because it's even less intuitive and, if you, like me, don't know much about how to operate it, you're gonna have a really hard time to get it to work.
So you need an intermediary, somebody to translate the .exe Windows file into something a Mac can read. That intermediary is Kegworks. It works really well with most fan games (but not all) and is intuitive.
I suggest following the steps this website provides, up until Step 4 included: https://machow2.com/how-to-use-kegworks-on-mac/
If something feels sketchy to you, I highly recommend doing your own research: everything presented here is perfectly fine and consists of instruments used in the world of programming. But seriously, do your own research too! It's best to not just trust random strangers !
Ok, now you're done with Step 4, on the Launchpad you should see the Wrapper. Open it. A configuration menu should pop up. You're asked to indicate the path name to the file. A quick way to do this is to find the file in Finder (which you did in Step 4), right click it and keep the "option" button pressed while on the right click menu. This should present the option to copy the file as a Pathname (eliminate the ' you may see at the start and the end of the Pathname before proceeding). Once you do that, hit Test Run.
The configuration menu can also immediately say that the Test Run was concluded and delete the just put path name, but wait 30 seconds. A .bat file should appear with the pathname provided. If this happens, your program is about to run! You can get rid of the .bat file usually at this point: you made it!
P.S.: if the Pathname gets deleted with the Test Run, you may have to recreate the Wrapper every time you close the Configuration menu. I suggest that, for every wrapper, you immediately delete it, since it's about 1.5 GB (go to Finder, search for the wrapper name, place in Trash Can the .app file). No, deleting the wrapper does not delete the save file or the game: it's like deleting a translator on the spot, you're not deleting the person you're speaking to.
EDIT: looks like if you just put the Pathname in the Configuration menu, not run any tests and close it, then you don't have to repeat the process of creating a wrapper. Neat!
A conclusion: what works
Here is what I managed to get working:
The OG FNAF World
The Demo of FNAF World
Fixed
Refreshed 1.5 (a little buggy, especially the Flipside section. It will crash, but after a reboot it should work ok)
Redacted (game breaking glitch happening when two moves happen at once. Beware: it may damage your progress and you might have to start over! Beware of the Mimic Ball)
Overturned
FNAF World: Ultra (tap on the three dots on the Gamejolt download button. There should also be a .zip file, not just a .rar file)
Simulator
FNAC World, the old one (I didn't play it much, to be fair)
Corrupted Chaos
Here is instead what doesn't work:
Update 3 reimagined by Toy Chica Entertainment. It keeps crashing almost immediately. You can even get to a fight, but it's too buggy to play
FNAS World. Yeah... it doesn't work. It's there but... then it's just a black screen if you're lucky
When Worlds Collide. I think the RPG Maker engine doesn't work at all
I hope this may be of help! I'm not a Kegworks expert and I don't pretend to be. I proposed a way to get it to work, but I'm sure there are better ones! At least this will allow to set the basic framework for when Universal Madness gets here!
Congrats on making it this far! Now that you're here... care to guess the fan game in the image I attached?
