Muppy Muddington Tale

Today is the "Muppy The Bunny" series 10th Anniversary! Honestly, it's less of a series up until now, and more so weird experiments and concepts strung together on impulse disguising itself as a series. Thanks to everyone who's supported me throughout!

Wow! So...10 years already... It's like crashlanding in the far out future. Honestly, this series so far was mostly a weird since of impulsive decisions, some were semi interesting, most were kinda crap. I came up with the concept for Muppy after having a VERY vivid fever dream. At that time, I already knew I wanted to make a cartoon, because my favorite series at the time(I don't remember which one) ended and I was tired of all my favorite shows ending, so I wanted to make a never ending show. I originally was gonna make it about an Irish dog named Rishy. But the concept was "too complicated for me to animate" so I just kinda sat on the idea for awhile.

In the dream, I had a pet rabbit, his name was Sprinkles, he was made out of a mix of Play-Dough and that weird Kenetic Sand stuff if anyone remembers that. and we went on an adventure through the clouds, and just danced and had a good time. When I woke up I was really sad I could never see sprinkles again...having been a homeschooled nerd at the time, it was like finally making a friend, and then having to leave them behind. After that I decided I really wanted to "honor it's memory." I had no idea where to even begin, so I went on my computer, and looked up how to make a Youtube animation video and kind of did a half follow the steps(the video recommended doing 50 seconds of animation and to have a simple character doing simple things) and so I opened up MS paint and got out the circle tool resulting in...this thing.

image.png

After doing a whopping 3 frames and putting it into the old built in "Youtube Video Editor" on a loop for 50 seconds, I created my first "animation" Honestly, as crappy as it was, I was really proud of it at the time. When naming it I didn't want to go with "Sprinkles" because that sounded "too generic" apparently(idk I remember why, not that it made sense) So I just thought of other character names that were fun to say, eventually deciding I was gonna base his name on the 1983 Namco arcade game "Mappy" but instead change the "a" to a "u" and then add the typical Sonic naming scheme of "The Animal" for originality(yeah, Sprinkles was too generic for 9 year old me, but changing a single letter wasn't, though at least it sounds nice and was...technically original). From then on I tried to upload 1 video a week of him just doing silly things, like dancing to Gangnam Style(cause that was a big craze back then...I even animated the condom from the video with Muppy spinning it in the air... I didn't know what it was at the time so I thought it was a hotdog wrapper....) Eventually I got bored of doing just Muppy and wanted to add another character

image.png

For whatever reason I wanted to make a multicolored character. His name was Honey(The Black Eyed Bunny for whatever reason, this subtitle is never mentioned again, it wasn't even his gimmick?), and he was supposed to Muppy's best friend I don't really remember too much of the concept behind Honey's design though sadly. I eventually scrapped(and the re introduced) the multi colored aspect of his character as I could never remember what color he was supposed to be. Honestly, Honey's been one of the more generic characters throughout most of the series. In order to remedy this I later made it so he's a robot doll, and he has a propeller hat. His design was only recently finalized, despite being one of the earliest designs.

image.png

I also added the character "Baby Bunny" who eventually became one of the main antagonists of the series Todd Gust. He was just a random kid they babysat for some reason? Idk I don't remember his design process much. Eventually I redesigned him, basing his design off of Squidward's sea bear outfit!

I think my favorite concept from the original series was "The Jump rope car" which is one of the few things I'm keeping mostly unchanged from the original series. https://youtube.com/clip/UgkxATAiaIYe2JGWbzleIe4oKDlOdY-18tpO

Lilly was designed next, but sadly almost all of the super early designs of her were lost as she was never in the Youtube series itself, but rather just drawn on paper. The earliest one I could find was in 2016 for "Muppy The Bunny : Adventures". She was first mentioned as a like goal in the description of one of the videos(most videos only broke 30 views, and the like goal was 100 likes, so that never came to pass) She's probably the character that evolved most, initially being Muppy's girlfriend, then eventually his older sister, then she was aged down, and then aged back up. Her names been changed from Lizzy to Lucy and then Lilly, back to Lizzy for a bit and then to Lilly again. Even her color pallet(which is usually fairly consistent between characters) has changed like from all pink, to purple with a red dress, to pink with a red dress, to pink with a teal dress, and back to a red, to purple with a green dress, and finally her finalized design Pink with a blue overall dress, and a rainbow scarf. Her role until recently was that of a very minor side character, she was honestly one of the blandest characters in the original Muppy Muddington Tales rough draft, although after the rewrite she's now one of the most important cast members. She's very sassy, short tempered and obsessed with coffee. She generally snarky and rude, but she has a softer side and really cares for her family, with the anger mostly being her attempt at keeping Muppy and Dark in line, because they can be a bit dumb at times. Also as her character developed a bit more, I also decided to set up a romance between her and Mayor Light. Originally the plot was that Dark was gonna go through a redemption arc, and win over the support of a girl he kidnapped previously, Mayor Light and they were gonna get together at the end. But I hate the "couple get together at the end as a reward" trope, and their dynamic as a couple wasn't very fitting. Plus Dark as a character completely changed, being much younger and childlike, so I decided they get together and then break up almost immediately. But that was unfulfilling too, and since one of the traits I gave Light was that she wrote a novel about lesbian vampires in her free time, I thought "What if Lilly and Light were together" and honestly both characters were heavily expanded on! Their romance is honestly one of my favorite parts of the story so far.

Anyways, at some point in 2016 I'd been learning blender and wanted to make a movie(which was never finished! So I created two characters specifically for the movie Light, and Dark(real creative I know)

Dark was intended to be an evil version of Muppy's shadow after Muppy got really angry, while Mayor Light was just a random girl he kidnapped so he could gain control over her town. His character was based off of Lockheart from Care Bears for some weird reason, although I don't remember the specifics of what or why. Eventually I ended up merging him with another antagonist I had planned for the series "King Muddington" and eventually made him Muppy's brother, thus giving Muppy the name "Muppy Muddington" King Muddington was the ruler of world of Bunzica, and was in charge of the "Magic Jelly Bean Jar" which was a jar that produced...infinite magical jelly beans. After keeping it all to himself society collapsed and everyone became zombies??? I forget why though. I also found him to be very bland, so I made him way younger, and more childlike. His design has easily been the most inconsistent, constantly changing until finally landing on his final design less than a year ago.

Eventually I gave up on the movie, and I re-discovered the program Game Maker, after not using it for awhile. And instead wanted to make a game adaptation of the series, which became "Muppy The Bunny 1" But needless to say that did not go well. This was the first mention of "Mayor Light" Although she didn't actually appear for whatever reason. It was a very simple plot of "Oh no, Mayor Light's been kidnapped, by Dark! now Muppy's gotta go save her"

(It's not in any way shape or form canon to the current story and I directly retconned it with Muppy The Bunny: The Danger of Wishes, which is it's own universe separate from both the original series and Muppy Muddington Tales)

I also tried to publish it on Steam Greenlight back when that was a thing. And being my first exposure to widespread internet, while an angsty, slightly narcissistic middle schooler who was a bit of a jerk....needless to say it did not get on the platform and I was laughed off the internet for...awhile.... Ultimately though that experience did help me grow as a person, and I hope yall can forgive me for being such a jerk.

After that I created a few more smaller games, 2 of which were called Muppy The Bunny : Light vs Dark lol, one was a FNaF world clone using the Magic Jelly beans plot(never finished), and the other being another platformer, which was never finished. Eventually I created the next full game in the series Muppy The Bunny: Adventures!

image.png

This was the first game to give Muppy his scarf as I felt his original design was lacking. This one was one of my favorites, despite how short it was. https://gamejolt.com/games/muppy-the-bunny-adventures-demo/180419 Despite linking the demo, it has very few differences to the final version, just a slightly different ending. I made a few bad decisions that made the final version worse.

Eventually in March of 2017, in the old outdated even at the time. Blender Game Engine I made Muppy The Bunny 2 : A 3D Platforming Adventure

This game was...a mistake, this was honestly the project I'm least proud of, and I made so many weird choices during the development of it, starting over multiple times. All in all I spent around 8 months on the project, and it was...not worth it. Honestly it's one of if not the worst games of all time, arguably more so than 1. Honestly, I'm shocked I even finished it though, so that counts for something Despite this I started Muppy 3.

Initially I wanted it to be a 3D project, but after it quickly got too complicated I went back to 2D.

I decided to test it out creating the first build of "Muppy The Bunny 3, which would become Muppy The Bunny: The Danger of Wishes, and retcon the rest of the series. Started April 16th 2017, one year after the first release of the original game

From April 2017 to around Thanksgiving 2020 I worked on this game, this is easily my longest project, and one of my most proud of, having spent a lot of time on this project(I started when I was 13 years old and released the final patch when I was 18) I was going to release another, but sadly I lost the files, leaving it permanently unfinished :( I do have a debug build after the currently released build, but unless I can find a way to mod it and remove a few specific things that make it unfinishable I don't see any way to release it(I'll try and look into when I have the chance). Initially the story behind the game was that Muppy was depressed because he thought he wasn't good enough and went and found the cave dweller, who had a "wish orb" and he had to reclaim his life, which would be the backstory for the series. This plot was inspired by what I knew about Dragon Ball at the time(which was a basic plot summary I thought was neat but didn't watch it till two years later lol)

Muppy was also slightly redesigned, which was HEAVILY influenced by this artwork of Storyshift Asriel(who is probably my favorite character in anything ever) by Giga Goku https://www.deviantart.com/gigagoku30/art/Storyshift-Asriel-701264734

I also gave him a hat too so that's nifty I guess.

Eventually though I didn't want to tie it to the original series any more than it already was. So I did a soft reboot it into a story about two brothers separated by hate. Now that Dark was Muppy's brother I decided I would give Muppy the last name Muddington as well, creating the current iteration of the story.

This was what I consider the first major Muppy release. Honestly it had a pretty small but chill fandom, and it was fairly well received amongst all things considered. It even had a small little fandom going on for awhile! I never imagined someone other than me would like my games. Even now my friends Raccoonicorn, Glassseastar & Miguel who have been a part of the community for years still usually like and comment on my posts and stuff, it's honestly incredible. Thank you all!

Eventually after I "finished" that game(only to keep updating it for two years) I began work on Muppy The Bunny: Two Sides to a wish, and it's spinoff "Dark The Sorcerer: A Quest for Power"

The original version of it made it pretty far into development all the way to world 3, with multiple playable characters, and a story. A screenshot from the intro cutscene even making it in to the ending as a sort of teaser in an old build of MTB:TDOW.

image.png

This concept eventually grew and became Muppy Muddington Tales. This version of the game was completely lost due to a hard drive failure.

image.png

Originally you would be able to select from two stories, Muppy & Dark. This was a redemption arc from two sides, hence the original name "Two Sides to a Wish"

Eventually I renamed it into Muppy The Bunny: A Tale of Redemption, and then again reworking it into the current version of Muppy Muddington Tales, after scrapping the redemption plot in favor of Dark not needing redemption cause he's now a total bean who just tries to be evil and fails miserably, instead of being separated by hate from not being accepted into society for being grumpy. This version of the project was worked on for roughly 3 years in the background while I was updating The Danger of Wishes, having started over multiple times because I really wasn't liking the old direction it was going, as well as being forced to start over multiple times due to file corruption(Game Maker kept crashing during saves, corrupting the project entirely 5 different times). So I switched programs around January 2020, but I wasn't very good with other engines, so I decided to try and switch back to Game Maker for a bit which still was crashing like crazy, I was gonna use Gdevelop before but it would drain my battery in like 2 seconds, and I was pretty much always on the go before eventually starting completely over. So when starting over I recorded myself drawing some NPC designs.

https://gamejolt.com/p/character-design-is-my-passion-decided-to-record-myself-drawing-s-dwaxuj6s

image.png

Easily the most important of these was this one. I liked it so much it was adapted into the character Mernotious, A.K.A Mernos who is objectively the main antagonist of the series now(although Todd is just as important antagonist).

image.png

This guy is such a chaotic menace, his goal is just to screw with everyone and make everything anyone does inconvenient because he finds it fun.

Eventually though after misdrawing his hat one time and it looking kind of like a bow, I created his sister "Goddess Queen Monotious Anna Mei"

image.png
image.png

Mono is by far my favorite character. Her character is partially inspired by Aqua from Konosuba and Count Bleck from Super Paper Mario(Wii). I touched on a lot of her character in the January update, so I won't get into it too much here but basically she's a Goddess in charge of making sure souls pass on properly, and guarding Haven's Gate and the scepter of life. She's easily flattered, and deeply in love with Muppy. Her body is a literal black hole, with her blush color also changes depending on what she's feeling.

Anyways, my little sister also made multiple designs for the series wanting to help out some, resulting in Clover & Pepper

image.png

This is Clover and Pepper. I don't wanna share too much on their characters yet, as they won't be relevant until fairly late into the story and there are multiple big plot twists, so they are kind hard to talk about.

Anyways, I think I'll wrap this retrospective up now! It was fun to look back at the times I spent creating some of the weird stuff, thinking about all the experiences making this series, honestly this was just a real quick walk down memory lane, there were so many other interesting concepts that didn't make it, and so many more little things that I just couldn't possibly touch up on in a text post.

I also released a small tech demo! It ain't much but honestly I just wanted to get something out for today to celebrate for a happy 10 years of Muppy! I actually released another demo earlier this month, but I was not happy with it so I took it down within the first 5 minutes it was up. Thats why it says it was released 24 days ago.

So apparently GMS2 has a sequence editor. I stopped using it after 1.4, so I was unaware of that so I've been trying to animate frame by frame. I pulled an all nighter trying to re animate the first few cutscenes, this was the result. Still VERY W.I.P.!

I was originally going to do the prologue section last, since the original plan was that it would a remake of MTB:TDOW but I changed most of the plot and gameplay so I decided to do it first plus it stands on its own anyways. So anyways here is a teaser!

Test footage for a potential Undertale fangame I might work on. Probably won't get too far with it though, I don't have many concepts in place other than for the main character.

Muppy Muddington Tales : January 2023 Main Progress Update (Warning Major Spoilers)

Finally re-did the designs for the main trio in my new style.

New demo released! Things are getting really crazy in my personal life so I probably won't be able to work on this for a month or two, and it's very buggy so keep that in mind Mac & Linux Builds will release soon. It wouldn't build so I'll try again later

Alright, got things flowing a little better already, still obviously very early but overall starting to shape up really well IMO.

Since Mickey Mouse became public domain earlier this year, I wanted to try and draw my own version!

Progress is going smoothly once again, my attempts at animating the cutscenes are still...not good, but I am learning.

I'm going to try to get a new demo out soon, the prologue is roughly %75 complete, it's technically beatable other than boss fights, bonus levels, the sub area, and some cutscenes, it really needs some major touch ups though(especially Heatway Desert).
