Ive been revisiting older call of duties, and that’s what taught me that nostalgia isn’t even the real reason so many people feel this way. The games used to be made by and for their target audience, and now they have fallen down the pit of not targeting an audience at all, but rather try to appeal to everyone, resulting in a generic, soulless experience. Specifically in the campaign section. The stories used to be powerful without trying to be anything but a good story, and writers never had to force underwhelming “controversial” moments into the game to make it feel like something greater than it was. Simply playing an older call of duty game from the peak 2003-2012 era will show you that modern call of duty has not evolved, it has lost the plot for a while now. Why am I ranting about this? Good question. Waste of time for sure. However, I think it’s time that a developer tries to harness the same soul and passion call of duty brought to the fps genre, and create the next generation of these types of gritty military shooters, which we haven’t had in a long time. Modern technology makes this easier than ever, as the average game dev has more resources (technically at least) then activision did when they created the og modern warfare trilogy. The problem is, waiting for someone else to do this is not going to work.
My whole point in this is I am considering once again going back to my game dev roots and creating my own fps game. I know I can make something great, and we’ve had major breakthroughs with indie titles lately, but nothing quite the same with military fps titles. Just some food for thought.
