Back in the dark ages, he was in great fear of the black plague so he used an incantation to encase his life force inside his spell book as a sort of time capsule. Several decades later into the modern day, Joshua and Felix find the book in some castle ruins deep in the woods, say the incantation, free the wizard, and dipfuckery ensues.
