For several years I've developed games on for the Android phone on Gamemaker: Studio until I recently made the switch to Unreal Engine 4. This new engine gives me the ability to create games that operate in a first person perspective. My current project involves me working with the College of Media and Communication at Texas Tech University to develop stimuli for a research study on why people prefer to play certain types of games.
My inspiration for the games I create is largely based on The Beginner's Guide by Daney Wren. Davey is also the creator behind the masterpiece The Stanley Parable. Both games taught me that there really isn't any hard and fast definition of what a game is, and ultimately if I want to create a game, the best thing I could let my creation come from the heart. Input from others is good for fine tuning, but it becomes too much to create the game specifically for them. I've tried that a few times with some games on Steam Greenlight. Every time I would get a negative comment I would try to fix the problem with the game right away. It was very stressful and depressing trying to please everyone. As the Beginner's Guide taught me, the game doesn't even need to be playable for it to achieve it's intended purpose.
