When I was younger, I wanted to be a writer. I wrote my first short story when I was 9. Then I had the fanciful idea of sending the story off to Nintendo to make it into a game. I don't know what I was thinking then, but the idea that stories and games were meant to be together has stuck with me ever since. A few years later, still wanting to be a writer, I decided I wanted to be known as "Creator of Worlds" and so I would write fantasy stories and books set in a new world each time. I was so naive then.
Along side my writing, I also tried my hand at making games. These were always patterned after games I loved, like Myst and The Dig and the Dragon Quest series. I wanted to tell stories with my games. Over time (and after a bad experience with creative writing expectations in undergrad), I decided to go all in on games. Games could tell stories in special ways. There was a player there, and what they wanted was important. Games that tried telling stories were the ones that I was most drawn to.
And so, here I am, making worlds in games. But these worlds are not just places. They're stories. They're characters thrown together. They're conflict, but not the killing kind. I'm still working at my title. I'll get there someday.
