Functions were, initially, the idealisation of how one variable quantity depends on another. For example, the position of a planet is a function of time. Historically, the concept developed alongside infinitesimal calculus in the late 17th century, and until the 19th century, the functions considered were differentiable (that is, they possessed a high degree of regularity). The concept of a function was formalised in the late 19th century in terms of set theory, which greatly expanded the potential applications of the concept.
