What do you think?

Finally, the good video game

I'd like to give some background about how this game came to be.

BJ Laigun and Wish are both Korean Oni game developers from the 2010s.

Bepeu Oni translates as Best Friend Oni.

My translations of each of these games are not public, as I haven't locale-proofed them.

I made translations of all of BJ Laigun's games. Hi Oni 1 & 2, as well as Lie Oni 1, 2, & 3. Wish made a follow-up series in which the events took place after Lie Oni 3. This would be Bepeu Oni. I translated all 4 of the games, and it was stated at the end up Bepeu Oni 4 that the ending of that game was fake and that it was to be concluded in Bepeu Oni 5: The Real Finale. This never happened. There were rumors of a Bepeu Oni: Complete Edition, which makes a lot of sense when I actually look at each game project, but that also never happened. It was meant to link all of the games together, but since the 5th one was never released, I can only assume that the project was canned.

This is where I come in. Since I translated each of the games, I decided that my knowledge regarding the series was relatively well-rounded, so I decided to finish what Wish started. I decided to rewrite the lore to make it all in one continuity, and I decided to change the name. Shin'yuu No Oni is literally just Best Friend Oni in Japanese, since a lot of fangames like to use Japanese names. I also think the juxtaposition of the 2 languages in the title is kinda funny, and matches the same jank that Wish had with his games.

It's meant to be sort of comedic, a little horror, somewhat serious storytelling, but also just kind of nonsensical sometimes. I don't think I could really match the type of games that Laigun and Wish made, because their humor was very Korean-centric, so I decided to put my own spin on it since it is my project after all, so I put things in I think are funny.

Credits are in the .txt file in the game folder.

I have been working on this project since December. I initially released builds over Google Drive and Discord, but due to file sizes, I decided to release it over Gamejolt, so I could also make it more public, and keep all the versions of the game in one place.

If you have any feedback about the game, please let me know. Enjoy the game!

I'm keeping the file downloads for each Demo of the game up for archival purposes, also if you would like to see the progression and changes throughout development of each version.

The full game is out today! 🥳 Enjoy! I decided that I would release it today, since it is fully complete in terms of game content. I may make another build in the future with rewritten dialogue and a few additional changes, like a dev room and stuff.

The game is currently finished content wise. It could possibly release as early as tomorrow, but if I decide to do a complete dialogue rewrite, it may take slightly longer. I may also tweak a few things, but I'm unsure at the moment.

Change of plans - I won't be doing a Pre-Release. The next will be the full game. I'm going to make a trailer for it, it's almost finished. I don't have a time frame, but it will be sometime this month. I will update the page with the full release.

When I release the next version of the game, I will be adding more content to the page. It has come to my attention that there is a bug that completely breaks the game, so please use items in the intended spots. I have fixed it, thanks to @NardBruh

Demo 4 has been released today. If you're wondering about the file size, that isn't an error. I decided to cut a few music files down in length to save space, as well as getting rid of a few things that were unused from previous versions.
