Book of Death: The King must die

Story

As a devoted member from the Order of Fate Enforcers you are on a sacred mission to kill a beloved king in a western empire. The Book of Death will aid your quest.

Ctrl: toggle visions

Tab: pause menu (or Esc, if you are not playing in fullscreen)

Esc: exit fullscreen

Restart: from pause menu (upper right corner)

Gameplay

A typing detective game prototype inspired by Golden Idol games, Return of the Obra Dinn, knowledge-based puzzle games and – of course – the Death Note TV Series.

As your investigation progresses, additional rules of the book are revealed.

If you want to learn the name of the King, you will have to kill other people first.

In this game you can
– kill characters whose name you know
– piece together character names from documents and dialogues
– find small secrets
– learn new mechanics about the death book
– decide the outcome of the battle of Wasatou
– solve murders (be the murderer)
– explore small choices
– read (read a lot, maybe even too much, mucho texto the game???)
– write down names into the book with your right hand, while you take a potato chip with your left hand and EAT IT

Saving

Progress related to the investigation (e.g. solved names, notes) is saved automatically by the game. Changes to the story (e.g. killed characters) are not saved.

Save files are stored as browser cookies. If you clear your cookies, you may lose your in-game progress!

AI content information

Most visual elements are made from free assets created by various artists and some AI-generated content will also appear. In the final version I want to avoid using AI, but for budget reasons, maybe I will still need it for less important assets. For that, I would like to use Retro Diffusion, which was trained on licensed assets from Astropulse and other pixel artists with their consent.

If you still think that is a bad idea, please write down your concerns in the comments/survey. Or write down "AI" into the Death Book.
