Dearly, Accursed TECH DEMO
"Dearly, Accursed" is a top-down dungeon crawler, created to answer the question: "is it possible for a game's setting to be completely dark?" for my #KSUCapstone20 class I'm taking. Through much experimentation, this demo is what I've realized as the answer to that question. Using your flashlight, you can look around the world and see only what's in front of you. Your light will have different effects on the world around you as well, so be sure to be careful what you're looking at!
This game was created for my Senior Capstone project, I had the intention of creating a game about trying to invoke the feeling of dread into the player with imagery and game design techniques that weren't necessarily based around horror. However, as the semester continued, my vision stayed the same but the programming knowledge required to create what I envisioned was far out of reach. Instead, the project took a nose-dive into learning about dynamic lighting, AI, and state machines. As a still relatively new programmer, these were some integral pieces of information I had to learn, and even though I did, it took up most of the time I spent creating the project. This brings me to the state you see the game in currently.
The game is considered a Demo as of right now, though I would personally classify it as more of a showcase of what I've learned over the past year or so I've spent learning programming. I would love to make "Dearly, Accursed" into a full game, though I currently still lack a lot of the skill I need to make it turn out the way I want others to see it. This project will be revisited at some point in the future, but will likely have to be built back up from scratch in an engine that better supports the kind of lighting I want to be utilizing!
