I was doing some tinkering in GB Studio and came up with this, which does exactly what the title suggests - no more, no less.

Letting you take a peek behind the curtain just a little bit: this is a vertical scroller that doesn't actually do any scrolling... 👀

  • Everything takes place on a static background, with enemy actors being pulled in from offscreen then returning to their starting positions after finishing their pass.

  • There appear to be seven enemies altogether, but really there's six as the craft that flies diagonally from top-left to bottom-right actually then moves top-right to fly bottom-left*.

  • Once the craft that flies straight down the middle has gone offscreen, that's one pass of the total loop, which will then repeat ad nauseum or until you get blown up, restarting the scene.

* Now that I read this back, I realise I could probably pull the whole thing off with just the one enemy actor... 🤔

Screenshots are taken from various stages of development; the destructible enemy ships were indestructible asteroids for a while, and "Scene Test 1" in the lower left used to mean something when I had more than one test scene using different parameters. It is what it is 🤷‍♂️

☝😐 If anybody has the sheet music for the song I'm covering for this one, please hit me up; I'd be very interested to check how close/far off I am... (some of those bends in the solo are definitely jank in this version...!)
