This is pretty neat. Seems that ever since the Sonic 1 SMS remake was released (and its engine), we're finally getting more SMS-styled Sonic games.
This remake is pretty good. It definitely gives a nice look at what Sonic 2 SMS would have looked like if it was actually based on the MD/Genesis game. Plus it's nice to see an unused zone make an 8-bit remake. I'm curious to see if any others return.
I'd say my main criticism would be the platforming segments in Wood Zone 1 and Hilltop Zone 1, especially the former! The platforms and a bit inconsistent and Wood Zone 1 having it being over a bottomless pit doesn't help. I'd say one potential improvement here would be to add lower-section ground and have the platforming section contain rewards for those who go through it.
The engine itself is pretty good, not perfect but it does its job nicely and runs well. As someone who's played Sonic 1 SMS on an Android it plays nicely on a handheld. There is a glitch where you can jump in the air when walking off the ground, which I believe has been an issue since the original Open SMS Engine's release (I think the game doesn't check if there's any ground so walking off the floor will still allow ground-only actions). I think it could be patched, though it is common amongst all games made with the engine, I think, plus it can make the game easier.
Overall, a good demo! I'm quite interested to see the game finished!
good game, but theres a few problem.
1 -
sonic is a bit too slow underwater
2 -
you somehow die from touching spikes
3-
the options gives me an error
4-
no badniks? :(
there are a few other but those are the main ones
i never played a master system game anyway, but overall this game is still pretty nice
