Origins of the game
There was a 5 month gap between finishing Super Mario War with NES graphics version 1.6 and the release. This was likely needed for adding new maps and skins to the game. In those days, you couldn't upgrade to new versions of games directly so there was no point hanging around. I gave myself some time off and the developers (me included) behind Super Mario War with NES graphics also took some extra time.
Before the release of Super Mario War with NES graphics version 1.6 on June 25th, 2025, we started development on Wolfenmario 3D on June 19th, 2025. It was my idea to set the game before Super Mario Bros. 3. During its early development, it was originally supposed to be a mappack for Mari0. Only once Super Mario War with NES graphics version 1.6 did as well as it did and Wolfenmario 3D started to look sufficiently different from Mario '85 PC-Port Remastered was the decision made to make it a mod for Wolfenstein 3D. This was quite far into the project. (maybe 3.5 months or so)
We redesigned some of the maps in Super Mario War with NES graphics version 1.6 ourselves. This took us about 5 months. In the meantime, the developers behind that game were able to get straight onto Wolfenmario 3D. This worked well as there aren't that many code changes from Super Mario War with NES graphics to Wolfenmario whereas it did involve building new maps and creating new sprites and textures for the game. The developers used the Wolfenstein 3D codebase for a few days until I was available to make some minor code changes.
I remember working on Wolfenmario being more stressful than Super Mario War with NES graphics. There was also a tight deadline as well as high expectations. In addition, there was version 1.6 of Super Mario War with NES graphics on June 25th, 2025. However, during this date, it became clear how much attention Super Mario War with NES graphics attracted and that game slowly got followers and likes overtime. Some of our fans have powered through on adrenaline but it became clear that we needed a bit more of a gap for the next unofficial Mario game.
The way of working was probably the same as Super Mario War with NES graphics. It was all about the maps. The story was written ourselves. I was determined to add some more new skins and maps to later versions of Super Mario War with NES graphics and released them later on. Getting Mario from Super Mario Bros. 3 to replace William "B.J." Blazkowicz as the main protagonist was mostly a good idea. In those days, some protagonists in games may have backstories, but some of them may not. Mario from SMB3 was perfect for the part.
It was amazing to see how the feeling of the game changed completely with just some sound effects reused from the original Half-Life and other games. The sprites and textures have changed overtime, the level design was also modified overtime, the game looked much better than it was before. It also transformed the game.
