This was really fun! Loved the mix up on the breakout formula. I found that if you pushed the ball too close to the top of the screen the ball disappeared. Buuuut then I discovered I could still score points by baiting enemies and turrets to shoot the bricks which was very cool! You're rewarded for the extra danger. Well done!
I've always enjoyed those brick breaker style games and I felt like this was a nice reimagining of the genre. I've never played a brick breaker like this before and I thought it had a lot of interesting ideas to offer. I thought using the ball to both break bricks and as an attack was pretty neat. A cool entry!
Very cool idea! I love this combination of Breakout and an infinite scrolling shmup, with a little bullet dodging thrown in. Do you have any plans to continue work on this and add more features after the jam? I think you've got a pretty neat core idea that you can iterate on!
Yufo and Comette is a unique take on the arcade classic Breakout where the roles have been reversed!
After colliding with each other deep within space, Yufo and Comette must climb out of the deep crater they fell inside! Help Yufo dodge enemy projectiles with the WASD or Arrow Keys. He can also guide Comette's trajectory with well timed collisions, allowing her to clear pesky debris or subdue the duo's foes. Without the aid of Comette, Yufo is defenseless against enemy attacks. The more foes you defeat, the higher your score will go.
Scoring is determined as follows:
1 point for every tile height you travel upwards
10 points for every debris block broken
25 points for every bullet destroyed
100 points for every cannon destroyed
250 points for every missile destroyed
BUG WARNING: When pressing enter to restart the game it will not work.
Just reload the tab please.
I fixed this bug after the jam ended, and uploaded the fixed build at https://kilomatter.itch.io/yufo-and-comette
Bear in mind the version linked above is not the official entry for the Opera GX Jam. I will continue to polish up the game over on Itch.
All assets except for the generic font were made by me, @Kilomatter .
The game itself was made in GMS2, the graphics were made in GMS2's sprite editor and Aseprite, the sound effects were made in Chiptone, and the music was made in Jummbox.
