Good day to post even more stuff! Also, the crappy pixel art screenshot is from the [ error: you really thought I would just reveal what it is used for that easily? too bad! ] !

This devlog is going to be a bit big, so brace yourselves:


What is up with the poll about version numbering for CDH1 Reopened?

Well, part of it is that I’m indecisive, but more importantly:

I made the poll because I wanted to see how you all view the remake. It might seem like a small thing, but the version number actually says a lot about how the game is framed and what players expect from it. I wanted to involve you all in that decision, instead of just choosing myself and potentially confusing everyone.


Why is the filesize so large??

I got carried away

Honestly, I didn’t expect it to hit almost 400mb. At best, I thought it would be less than Cube's Dark Hours 3, but oh boy I was wrong!

There's not much I can do right now this late in the development stages, but maybe in the future I can figure something out!


Will there be a 6-Hour mode like in Cube's Dark Hours 3?

I haven't really considered bringing it back, mostly because I don't want to waste the player's time. It would just drag on, and making a checkpoint system isn’t as simple as it sounds. There’s a lot to factor in when it comes to actually coding it.

Long story short, the 6-Hour mode will not be returning.


Why haven't you considered making an Endless Night?

Good question! I don't have an answer, because I don't know why I never considered it. I have had thoughts, but never actually gave it a try.

Before you ask, don't expect Endless Night to be in the final game.


Will previous games also get unlockable achievements?

No, mostly because I want to preserve the games as they are. I may consider Cube's Dark Hours 3, but there's only a slim chance for that.


Will CDH1 Reopened also have cutscenes like Cube's Dark Hours 3?

Yes, but it will have less cutscenes compared to Cube's Dark Hours 3. The decision was made mainly because I want the game to stick closer to the original game’s structure. CDH3 was more story-heavy by nature, while Reopened is more of a modernized, revamped and extended remake of CDH1.

I didn’t want to overload it with cutscenes just for the sake of matching CDH3, I’d rather keep the pacing tight and only add scenes where they fit.


Why doesn't Dave have a mouth?

He's a mute character, and I just decided to incorporate that with his design as well!

Also explains why "DAVE" doesn't have a mouth in Cube's Dark Hours 3, even though it's a Grape King suit, and Grape King had a mouth in CDH: The Pricklz.


If Dave is mute, how could he talk in Cube's Dark Hours 3?

(In reality, he simply messed around with the suit’s voice chip. Just because he’s mute doesn’t mean he can’t get creative.)


Will the "Together Again" challenge return in CDH1 Reopened?

I'm kind of "on the fence" with that idea. Part of me wants to bring it back, but part of me also doesn't want to. The best answer I can give right now is: Time will tell.


Will other games also receive their respective Reopened remakes?

Cube's Dark Hours 2 and CDH: The Pricklz will definitely get a Reopened version in the future.

Cube's Dark Hours 3 will probably not get a Reopened version, because the game is already good enough as is. In the future, maybe a v2.0.0 could be considered, where it would just remaster the game's visuals, but keep everything else the same.


Do the characters have voicelines in the Game Over screen in CDH1 Reopened?

Yes, they do!

And, in other news, the game will finally introduce the Restart button, where it takes you back straight into the night instead of taking you back to the Main Menu. Hey, better late than never, right?


How big of a change will CDH1 Reopened introduce with its mechanics?

Just as I've said previously, everything that the original game taught you should be thrown out of the window.

For example, Spidor now does something far worse than just disabling the Flash Beacon. His taunting laugh still remains though, yipee!


Is there something you almost scrapped but decided to keep in, and now you're glad you did?

This section actually spans through multiple games in the series. One thing that I almost ended up scrapping every single time was the Custom Night.

To put it simply: For some reason, every time I start coding the Custom Night part of the game, the character AIs stop working. After that, I am stuck troubleshooting for hours, and then finally something ends up working, meaning I wouldn't have to scrap the Custom Night!

You could call it a "skill issue", and I wouldn't even argue :p


Did the character infos change, or are they the same?

They have been changed, and they have also been revamped and extended. Don't worry, it still keeps the core fundamentals that the original game introduced with the characters.


How different will the character pathing be compared to the original?

The character pathing will be much more different compared to the original. There may still be a chance where you can predict some movements, but let's just see how it goes :]


How many unused assets are in CDH1 Reopened?

Quite a lot, actually! The Extras Menu (Goodies section) has two pages dedicated to it, so that should give you an idea on how large it is!


Will the Classic skins remain enabled even after having the game closed?

Probably not. They’ll likely reset when you close the game.

Yeah, it’s a bit of a weird design choice. It isn't meant to be permanent, it’s more of a session-based toggle for now. Maybe I’ll revisit it later if it turns out to be annoying.


Will the original game get ported to CDH1 Reopened?

No, and it doesn't need to be. The original game is still up and isn't going anywhere, so there’s no need to include it inside Reopened. Plus, it would just make the file size bigger for something that’s already easily accessible.


Will the April Fools demo get ported to CDH1 Reopened?

Like I mentioned in one of the previous posts, the April Fools demo will be available as a separate download alongside the full release of CDH1 Reopened.


Will CDH: Employee Training receive updates adding more questions?

To put it simply: Time will tell.


On the topic of CDH: Employee Training, will it get ported to CDH1 Reopened (like in Cube's Dark Hours 3)?

It won't be ported to Reopened.

Slightly off-topic, but looking back at Cube's Dark Hours 3, I may consider removing the port from that game as well.

CDH: Employee Training already has its own game page, and having two versions just seems reduntant in my opinion.

What do you all think? Would you prefer I keep the port, or remove the port and let it stand on its own?


Will CDH1 Reopened receive an actual demo?

I might consider it. For example, a demo of the game could be avaialable to download as soon as the game trailer finishes its premiere. With that, even if it may take a few days to release the full game, playes will get a taste of what to expect in the full game!

Again, no promises. I am not confirming a demo, just thinking about it.


Why haven't you considered making minigames (like FNaF 3, FNaF Sister Location, etc.)?

The short answer is that I'm absolutely terrible at making minigames and decent pixel art, so I just go with the route of cutscenes.

Who knows? Maybe I can look back on this and actually give it a shot in the future!


Will other Pricklz characters make a return?

They mostly return as references. Besides that, they do not return.


Why is there no Grape King reference in Reopened?


If Darkhog could speak, who would be his VA?

That's the million dollar question!

Darkhog's VA would most likely be Maxzuriel13 (@ZurielCarson ), but since Darkhog can't speak, well, it's only left up to interpretation :]


What is the most obscure fact about the Cube's Dark Hours series you would share with us?

The fact that this whole series started because I was bored.


Would you ever do a "Developer Commentary" playthrough of your games?

That's... actually not a bad idea.

I could look into it one day, sharing my thoughts, visions, and even reveal stuff that probably no-one knows! If I were to do this, it would most likely be through a live-stream instead of a long-form video (although the vod will always be available).


Was the CDH1 April Fools demo considered or was that decision made later on?

The April Fools demo was made as a later decision. Looking back, I wasn't sure what to make for April Fools, so I just went with something simple.

Although, if I could go back in time, I would've made a dating simulator instead.


Will the Warning Screen be the same as the original?

Sadly, it will not.

CDH1 Reopened's Warning Screen will be its own thing with its own text.


How difficult will CDH1 Reopened be?

It will definitely be more difficult compared to the original. Compared to other games in the series, it's up to debate.

If we consider the game without any comparisons, Reopened will have many things to juggle, but it shouldn't be too overwhelming!


What other quality of life features will CDH1 Reopened have?

It has a decent handful of QOL features!

For example, there is something as small as a startup sound for the cameras, or even something helpful as a fading camera map (whenever the cursor is away from it)!


How will the character visibility be on the cameras?

There will be some areas on the cameras where characters will be difficult to notice. Make sure to keep an eye out!


When do you plan on redrawing the banner?

Eventually, most likely after Reopened releases. Maybe I'll even consider making it into a live stream, who knows?


Will the "Tape Box" have more sound effects?

I have added two extra sound effects, making it four total.

Maybe, with future updates, I can add more sound effects, or maybe even before release, I'm not sure.


Will you make an automated voiceline phone number for CDH1 Reopened?

Will there be cutscenes when completing max 20 mode in the Custom Night?

Yes, both Custom Night variants will have a cutscene upon completing max 20 mode!

I've repeated many times that I have no idea how it works. I followed a tutorial, and I still couldn't figure it out. Maybe I could look into it again in the future, or not, I have no idea.


Are you still planning to make a developer live stream?

Maybe, maybe not, I'm not sure.

I've expressed my opinions before, part of me wants to, but part of me keeps saying "SECRET SECRET SECRET-"...
