Hi
Well, two days left in the voting period! It is basically time for me to start saying: vote for mah damn game!
I have this really weird relationship with the voting. It is day eight and I have like, 300 views, 60 downloads, and 8 votes. For the most part, folks are coming to the game page and not downloading it. I feel like the reason is probably that the graphics are not shiny, and there is little I can do about that. Gunship Souls has the “instantaneous velocity” problem: if you see a picture of GS, you have no idea how awesome the game is. It just looks like a bunch of dots and circles on a starfield. If you are playing or watching GS, it quickly become apparent that the game is a fast-paced arcade bullet-hell, that it is brutally difficult, and has a minimalist visual style that works.
I’ve taken the game to in-person events, and there, where I can have the game running, people are instantly attracted. I have 1.5 hours of video from a recent dev meetup in Vancouver; peoples’ reactions were golden. I’ve tried to capture that with 30 second game-play videos on the front page… but those videos literally have 1 view each (mine), probably because the thumbnail looks like nothing.
The lesson has been learned, but the damage is irreversible.
Here are some 30 second gameplay videos.
Go play Gunship Souls, and don’t forget to vote!
Thanks,
z.
