I made up my mind, I’m going to switch engines.
It’s not like Löve is bad or anything, it’s just not comfortable enough for me. I’m tired of coding the basics like menus or GUI, or digging up the game loop, computing delta times, etc. Most of the time I spend on development so far was spent on building the infrastructure for the game logic, and not making the actual game. Because of this the dev speed of the project was as slow as a snail and felt like a chore instead of the fun it’s supposed to be.
Hence the decision to switch to another engine and start again. I’m not sure what will I take, I’m looking with hope at Godot. On the other hand I want to make some quick new project, so there will be a break here.
In the mean time I’ll make a game or two in something fast & easy like Axis Game Factory or Game Guru, or maybe RPG Maker. This will give me the goodwill to come back here and move again with Alive Again (pun intended ;-) ). Looking from time perspective, I made the usual newbie gamedev mistake - I wanted to make “the big one” as one of my first projects and in effect it hit me in the face :-P.
TL;DR - The project is on hold, there will be other projects in the mean time, afterwards the project will start again with a new engine.
