Ball X


The LCD mini games. I grew up with these things. Very small computer games, which were only a minimal amount of hard ware with an LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) screen only being able to show very little things, quite often there are a kind of card put in the background in order to create some scenery.

Now Ball-X is all about a juggling monkey. Now even for the kind of game it is trying to emulate there are a few flaws, and yes, I grew up with these, so I do think I'm the right one to review this game. Games with a concept this simple were there, even in the old days, so no comment on that (although more complex games did exist). Just make sure the monkey keeps catching the balls. The way the monkey does not only move its arms but also its legs in order to create some cosmetic detail is a big plus though. The does get boring after awhile. The game does speed up, but then slows down again, and so you can basically keep this up forever. Slowdowns were in the real counterparts of these things a rarity. Now as soon as you drop the ball it's game over, but the score also immediately resets to 0. It would be prudent NOT to reset the score at that point, but wait with that until a new game is started. Game over is the point where you want to know how long you kept this up, after all. Yes, the real counterparts I owned myself did keep the score on screen during game over stages. They even remembered the highest score, so you could try to top yourself.

Despite the flaws, I love this attempt to keep the old LCD games alive, and I would certainly encourage others to follow this example (I've been thinking of a few concepts myself, but I already have multiple time-consuming projects open so I must make choices. Hard choices).
