Behind Ten Days of Reckoning - pt 1

Hey there.

Im gonna talk about how this game was made and the inspiration on why i made it in the first place.

If you guys notice, i had another kinda similar game to this called ‘Defense of Khalata’ which i uploaded earlier this year.

To be completely honest, i was really inspired by the game Final Fantasy 15 when the first trailer came out like a few years ago. When i saw that, i thought to myself that i wanted to try to recreate something like that. At the very least, the basic fighting mechanic, just to get the feel of it. I know it was ambitious but i wanted to test myself.

I’ve always been a Final Fantasy fan since FF7. played FF7, FF8, FF9 FF Tactics, and Crisis Core. never played the rest as i never owned anything more than a Playstation One back in the day. Only recently FF10 and 13 was on the PC, but i never had the chance to try it out.

I did played The Last Remnant and it was an instant classic for me as it was still a turn based RPG with more party system and it was a beauty to play.

This game, i wanted to try to go the Action RPG direction. Initially like Crisis Core as it was the last Final Fantasy related game i played at the time. I wanted to incorporate the hack and slash and switching of skills in real time.

So i devised a story. A huge story involving 3 main characters who have strong ties to each other and we’re gonna explore their characters while adventuring to battle a certain evil.

I wrote the story for a while, but at the time i couldnt finish the story. But i had a clear vision of how it would play out and how it would might look like in the end. I made some sketches and and pitched the idea to some of my friends and students and they were interested by the idea.

So i figured i needed to make a test out of it. Just to get the main components right. The core experience. And so ‘Defense of Khalata’ was born. I made an endless hack and slash survival game so that we’ll be focusing on the fighting aspect of it rather than the story.

But i did give that prototype a story. It was supposedly a chapter of my original game story that i wanted to do in the beginning. But then i thought that i needed it to be independent from the original story. That it could stand alone or something. So i designed the short game with a short story just to have it make sense.

So the city we were in was Khalata. And supposedly there was this evil curse that made monsters came out across the land. So us being the hero, would defend the city of Khalata from hordes of monsters. So that’s the name ‘Defense of Khalata’ came to. I also for some reason wanted the acronym to say DoK. Don’t ask me why now as i kinda forgot why i wanted it like that back then.

So that’s the ‘why’ i made Defense of Khalata. I’ll be covering the technical aspects of development in my next post. I’ll also talk about the original team that made Defense of Khalata which was the start of Ten Days of Reckoning.

Thanks for reading.

Later!
