Canis Lupus Update #5: Character Upgrade System & Current Progress


Recently we have been designing a new character customization system based on perks and special abilities for each one of the main characters in the game. Our primary idea is to establish a solid personality with each one of the characters we allow you to play. The way you’ll play with each one of them need to be very different from the other and that’s what we are aiming to do right now.

Character Evolving

In most RPG style games, we always see a character menu where you put points in specific abilities to increase the power of the main protagonist. You spend way too much time in these menus, that might break the immersion of the player. In Canis Lupus, we will be trying to do something a little bit different. You won’t choose the perk you want to buy when you character level up. It will do automatically based on how much you have used a specific skill through the current level before leveling up.

In Canis Lupus, we have four perk styles that are named: sensorial perks, emotional perks, survival perks & combat perks. Each one of them has 4-5 special abilities that you will have to practice and upgrade.

Sensorial Perks will allow you to learn how to survive in the island and deal with your senses. It will allow you to carry more objects in your inventory, will allow you to swim deeper or to climb further, will let you hack systems and even recognize the environment where you are to tip you where to look for supplies.

Emotional Perks is a very nice idea we had, because people in a situation like this, trapped in an island, alone, will not handle the idea very well and will become mad very quickly. This category of perks can help the character to keep calm and not go crazy, or, can encourage the character to turn himself into a killing machine. This kind of perks will also change how the story progress.

Survival Perks will help you to deal with the dangers in the island. Will make you harder to detect when sneaking or more resistant to overall damage. When you find yourself between a rock and a hard place, destined to die, luck can be your friend and might will help you to find a safe point.

And at last, but not least, there is the Combat Perks that will increase and upgrade according to the type of weapon you use through the game. If you use more knives instead of bows, you will be deadlier in close combat and will be able to perform an one-lethal stab when out of the enemy vision camp.

Each group of perk has 4-5 perks available. Each perk has 3-5 ranks to upgrade, that changes or add more skills to the character. In total, the players will be able to choose 20 different skills amongst all the 58 options they will have. You won’t have control of what or when upgrade these perks. This will require you to change to a specific play style to have all the skills of one specific perk learned. We do not want you to lose time in perk menus, choosing a perk and losing the immersion of the game.
