As part of the development of The Backrooms Conundrum, a cooperative multiplayer game combining exploration, puzzle-solving and FPS, I designed an interactive central computer at the heart of the players' progress. This retro terminal, inspired by UNIX/DOS interfaces, can teleport the player base, run environmental scans, access player statistics and open doors via hidden identifiers in the game world.
One of the biggest technical challenges was to guarantee perfect data synchronization between all players, while maintaining the fluidity and responsiveness of the terminal.
A system that is not just a gadget, but a central pivot of the gameplay, where collaboration and collective interpretation of clues are key to advancing in the game.
