Introduction
Hi all Rovert followers, Deltarune Titans followers, and former Omega Jevil followers. I thought I'd make this post because Merg recently played this fangame, and now it's gaining a lot of traffic. I kind of put this game in the back of my head after I finished it and forgot it existed until I got a YouTube comment informing me that Merg played my game (Thank you pizzaBR.)
Summary
When Deltarune chapter 2 first came out, I was insanely hyped, (I really loved it) and I knew it would generate a lot of attention, and as a failed content creator I really wanted attention. So I did what anyone in my position would do and opened up Blender and threw together a 3D Spamton model. In a weird sense, this scenario was a repeat of the existence of the original Omega Jevil. Even though I rushed this fangame, it took me 2 months to redo the game engine and implement Sigma Spamton. Unfortunately, the scope was more significant than my head could handle, and the project ended up... okay. I'm proud that the actual game effects are more polished, and I'm proud of my coding of systems skills, I'll give you that. However, I'm a piss poor storyteller, as well as the fact that this game wasn't "Designed". It was just hastily mixed together into "undertale deltarune sm64 boneworks crackpot soup". This ended up being impressive in the same way "SM64 Last Impact" was impressive- fun to look at, but that's about where the fun stops.
The Game Itself
I will say it's an improvement over Omega Jevil- but not by as much as I thought in the past. In some ways, I added things that brought the game down, so the game really isn't that much better than Omega Jevil in that respect.
Graphics - I don't think people have played Undertale for the graphics so I'll keep this section brief. Most of the graphics in this game were just ripped from Undertale sprite sheets. For the graphics that were created by me, I think they were ok. The 3D model itself was kind of rushed together in Blender, and there are a billion better Spamton models out there. I heard one person say that I did it intentionally to mimick old computer graphics- but no, it's literally just a bad model. It's also very uninspired. Like, it's literally just a floating head of Spamton. Nothing else 'Omega' about it.
Gameplay - I will say this is definitely an improvement over Omega Jevil. The bullet patterns had more effort put into them, and I'm still kind of proud of the battle system (Although, many of the bullet patterns were Touhou ripoffs). The battle system even "shuffles" attacks so you don't get the same attack over and over again due to RNG. However, it didn't even end up as an Omega battle, just a weird mix of Undertale and Deltarune mechanics.
Originality - Do I need to say much? This wasn't a very original fangame. Originality is one of the things that make Undertale and Deltarune as good of games as they are- and this game heavily lacked it, unfortunately.
Story - This is where this fangame suffers the most. Aside from the many grammatical errors (lots of unintentional errors outside of Spamton's dialog,) the story structure was bad and all over the place. There WAS an attempt though, haha. It's kind of hard to come up with a story with strange restrictions like the ones I imposed on myself. More details are at the bottom of the document.
Apology to Merg
One other thing I highly regret from this whole experience was shortly after the release- I expected the same popularity as Omega Jevil (I had an entitled mindset because I thought it deserved more views because it was slightly more polished.) When I didn't get the popularity I wanted, I kind of got desperate and scrambled to "salvage" the content as much as I could. Here comes the regrettable part- I made a post on the GameJolt page telling people to pester Merg to play my fangame. I said something like "Comment on Merg's videos if you want him to play my game." I think using your audience as a "lever" for gaining popularity is kind of a crappy thing to do, and I did it. For a while, I figured Merg didn't play the game because he knew I was forcing the game into his face. When I saw he played my game, I instantly felt guilty. Merg, if you're reading this, I'm sorry.
The Future of Deltarune Titans
Despite all this, I've learned a few valuable lessons. Hopefully, I can apply these to future projects, as well as in my life.
Am I going to update Deltarune Titans for future chapters?
No. I have recently graduated college and am starting my work life. Of course, this doesn't immediately mean no more games- I just have to move on from fangames at some point, and make a legit original game from scratch.
However, I give permission for anyone to modify the game and continue it; I made the GMS2 source code public for anyone to see and use. I also made my attempted lore document possible, and sort of see what "Boneworks Ripoff" story I was trying to make.
Thank you for taking to the time to read this, and cheers to a better future
-Rovert
