Procedural Building Placements & Improvements

This week started off by having my shoulder x-ray and ultrasound checked. Fortunately nothing serious was found. It appears that I have very tiny shoulder calcification. I assume it’s related to a lack of joint movement in the past month or so because I did take a break from workouts due to another injury. However this is all just speculation. Until I was able to see a doctor on monday I kept the shoulder steady because I didn’t know what it was and didn’t want to do something wrong which may make things worse. After the diagnose I started doing very tiny shoulder movements. While the movements hurt a lot and mobility was very low in the beginning it all got better with every minute that passed. After several hours of micro movements the pain was already down to what felt like less than 10% of the original pain. I continued doing it throughout the week and the pain is now almost gone and mobility almost back to where it was previously.

I didn’t expect it to be getting better this quickly so I was happy to be able to work a bit this week after all.

I managed to add basic procedural house placement in the procedurally generated environment. Something I didn’t expect to be able to work on when I wrote last week's devlog.

With buildings/houses back in the game I also had to extend the terrain alignment/modification algorithm that previously had no smoothing between the modified and the existing terrain. This made the transition seamless and was the next step to having everything blend together. While there are still bugs in all the procedural systems I am happy to have implemented most of the big and important systems now. Like most weeks I also spent some time on project organization, small improvements and bug fixes.

With my shoulder having almost fully recovered I expect to be able to work at full capacity again next week.

Notable tasks this week:

  • Implemented basic chunk based procedural house placement

  • Added smoothing support to terrain alignment algorithm (left old - right new)

That’s all I got this week. I hope you are all doing well.

Stay safe out there and I’ll see you next week.
