Devs I’m scared, and I don’t know what to do.

Edit: I just want anyone that decides to read this to be aware that these were feelings of the past now. I have made a decision on what I will do going forward.

I’ve started this account to show my love for gaming franchises that inspired me to make games while at the same time try to learn how to make games for a potential career in the future. With the recent changes to Unity, I’m scared for what the future may hold.

I’ve been learning Unity for over a year now, and I’ve been loving it. I’ve been confident that Unity will be the engine that will help me get into college and hopefully into the industry, but with the new pricing structure Unity announced has put me in a weird spot. On one hand Unity is doing some scummy decisions, but on the other hand I have a class teaching Unity and I’ve been putting a good year into Unity and C#. Back on the one hand the Unreal Engine looks to be an easy and advance game engine, but back on the other hand the beginning of learning Unity was a huge struggle for me even though at heart of it a lot of the stuff was easy to understand.

I feel like if I make a full move to Unreal or Godot I would’ve wasted a full year and an entire class of good information, but if I stick with Unity then I feel like the dream career I want will be impossible to achieve without going into actual debt. Epic Games does understand the game industry way more than Unity, but I just feel stuck with Unity. I’m scared, and I feel that being a game programmer will not be in future if I don’t switch but at the same time I’ll waste so knowledge in the process of switching.

I’m going to wait and hope Unity goes back on these decisions, but even then can we trust the company? I hate this situation!
